The Boise State Broncos and Connecticut Huskies meet for the first time ever Saturday in East Hartford. The Huskies will make the return trip to Boise in 2018.

Boise State is 1-1 this season under first year coach Bryan Harsin. The Broncos lost to Ole Miss 35-13 in Atlanta beat Colorado State last week 37-24 in Boise. The Broncos are 1-1 ATS and the total is 1-1 as well. Connecticut is also 1-1  under first year coach Bob Diaco. The Huskies lost at home to BYU 35-10 and barely beat Stony Brook last week 19-16. UConn is 0-2 ATS and both games have gone under the total.

Boise State is being outscored 30-25 this season. The Broncos are averaging 538 yards per game including 308 passing and 230 rushing yards. On defense Boise State is allowing 460 total yards including 411 passing and 50 rushing yards per game. The Broncos have forced 6 turnovers and have 5 of their own. Boise State is averaging 87 penalty yards per game and opponents are averaging 49 yards. The Broncos are 13/32 on third and fourth down conversions and opponents are 15/35. Boise has forced 4 sacks and allowed 5 this season.  The Broncos are 6/9 scoring in the red zone with 4 touchdowns and opponents are 4/7 with 3 touchdowns.

Boise quarterback Grant Hedrick has completed 73.4% of his passes for 616 yards with 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, along with 30 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown. Running back Jay Ajayi has 53 carries for 305 yards and 2 touchdowns, plus 16 catches for 164 yards and 2 touchdowns. Receiver Matt Miller has 14 catches for 235 yards and a touchdown. Shane Williams-Rhodes has 18 catches for 116 yards. Two tight ends and four defensive players are listed as questionable or out.

Connecticut is being outscored 26-15 this season. The Huskies are averaging 289 total yards per game including 213 passing and 76 rushing yards. On defense, UConn is allowing 407 total yards game including 252 passing yards and 155 rushing yards per game. The Huskies have forced 2 turnovers and have 4 of their own. UConn is averaging 58 penalty yards per game and opponents average 129. The Huskies are 13/37 on third and fourth down conversions and opponents are 10/34. Connecticut has forced 2 sacks and allowed 7 this season. The Huskies are 3/7 scoring in the red zone with one touchdown and opponents are 4/5 with 3 touchdowns. Connecticut has a punt return for a touchdown and has allowed a defensive touchdown.

UConn quarterback Casey Cochran had to retire from football this week after multiple concussions. He had been splitting snaps with Chandler Whitmer but Whitmer will be the the full time starter. Whitmer has thrown for 255 yards and a touchdown. Max DeLorenzo has 19 carries for 61 yards. Geremy Davis has 13 catches for 209 yards and a touchdown.

Boise State is 4-1 ATS in September, 28-11-1 after allowing more than 280 passing yards, 3-7 after rushing for more than 200 yards, 2-5 in non-conference games, 2-6 after allowing less than 100 rushing yards, 1-4 after a win, in road games, overall, and on grass, and 0-5 after allowing more than 450 total yards.

Connecticut is 7-1-5-1 overall, 4-9-1 after allowing less than 20 points, 3-9-1 after a win and a cover, 2-6 after rushing for less than 100 yards, and after gaining less than 275 total yards, 2-9 after passing for less than 170 yards, 1-5 in September, 1-6 in non-conference games, and 1-7 after scoring less than 20 points.

Connecticut isn’t a very good team. The Huskies could only muster 223 total yards and 19 points against Stony Brook in a less than impressive win. Boise State has struggled both on defense and in turnovers on offense. Still, the Broncos should roll in this game even having to travel across country.
