DUKE
Duke’s two conference games have been a 14-31 loss to Virginia Tech and last week’s 28-14 victory over Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils were ranked prior to the loss to the Hokies, but at 5-1 have fallen out of the AP’s top-25 teams now. Daniel Jones has still had a sensational season. The quarterback has thrown for 821 yards on a 68.3 percent completion ratio with eight TDs and two interceptions. He has a passer rating 158.8, and he has rushed 27 times for 45 yards and a touchdown. Running back Deon Jackson leads the team in rushing yardage with 355 yards and five TDs. Brittain Brown has added another 317 yards, while Quentin Harris has rushed 27 times for 145 yards and Marvin Hubbard III has rushed for 118 yards.
The Blue Devil’s top receiver has been Johnathan Lloyd. He has caught 23 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns. TJ Rahming has added another 279 yards on a team-high 24 catches with four TDs. Duke has scored 10 rushing TDs this year and it has scored 15 via the pass. Davis Koppenhaver is tied for the team lead three-ways with four receiving TDs on his seven total receptions.
The Blue Devils have a balanced attack, but its offense overall is just good, averaging 32.0 points, No. 50 in the nation. Its defense has been the ticket, allowing just 17.7 points per game and ranking No. 20. Though Jones has been accurate, Duke gains just 215.5 yards per game via the pass, and that is a mark that can probably be improved upon, and it will have to be if Duke is to contend in the ACC after already having lost one conference matchup.
UVA
The Virginia Cavaliers secured a big victory in Week 7, knocking off then-No. 16 Miami by a count of 16-13. It was its first matchup against an AP-ranked opponent this season, and a big victory over a conference foe. Virginia is 2-1 in the ACC thus far, but it will be an underdog this week against Duke.
The Cavaliers’ defense was largely behind its 16-13 win over Miami. Jordan Ellis ran for a TD and Virginia held Miami to just 190 passing yards and 146 rushing yards in the game. It was outdriven in managing just 92 passing yards and 139 rushing yards itself. Ellis had 86 yards on his 18 attempts and the touchdown, but quarterback Bryce Perkins threw 12 of 21 with no TDs and three interceptions.
It was not a pretty offensive affair, but the Cavaliers got outstanding defensive performances from Zane Zandier, Charles Snowden and Chris Peace. The trio combined for 24 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. Virginia, though it had just two sacks and three tackles for loss, kept the pressure high the entire game and held Rozier to 170 yards and an interception with no touchdowns. Can it repeat that in Week 8 against Daniel Jones of the Blue Devils?
