Geno Smith has turned the culture around in New York, but the talented quarterback will be without his top receiver in this matchup in Kellen Winslow, who is facing suspension. The 3-2 start that Smith has helped the Jets to is their best since 2010, and he had 199 yards on 20 passes with three TDs in the 30-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons last game.
Going into the game against ATL, Smith was tied for the NFL lead in turnovers, but he didn’t have one against Atlanta and Pittsburgh’s defense is potentially the worst in the NFL, last in takeaways. That edge is what led NFL oddsmakers at Bovada to set the line a point in favor of the home team.
The Jets are also 2-0 at home this season, and Smith has been markedly better at home. The 0-4 Steelers have allowed 199 passing yards per game and Smith should have no problem picking apart their secondary. Even Minnesota was able to rack up 248 yards passing against Pittsburgh, so the stage is set for New York to have a big scoring fest if Smith gets going.
Ben Roethlisberger is showing more signs of decline this season and he has six turnovers in the last two games. Big Ben has 789 yards on the year, but the Jets are a good defensive team. Last time against New York, Roethlisberger threw 24 of 31 for 275 yards in a 27-10 victory, but the Steelers are a team on the decline and the Jets are rising.
