Ball State is 3-1 and has the 12th best passing offense in the nation but will find itself just one-point favorites in a matchup with Toledo this week, according to college football oddsmakers at 5dimes. The Cardinals defeated Illinois State Week 1, Army Week 2, lost to North Texas by a touchdown in week 3, and won over East Michigan last week, 51-20.
The total is set high for the college football odds this week, which is largely a reflection due to the strong offenses of both teams. Toledo has had decent effect with the pass, but is better rushing (59th, 188 yards per game). Ball State could represent the third consecutive victory for the Rockets if Toledo succeeds in winning this matchup.
Ball State’s Keith Wenning ranks top among NCAA QBs with 1,315 yards – 62.3 percent completion, 9 TDs and just 2 INTs. – a QB rating of 155.6. Wenning has also rushed for two TDs on the year and Willie Snead, Jamill Smith and Jordan Williams represent a trio of talented receivers. Ball State can score via the air (9 receiving TDs on the year).
Toledo’s David Fluellen dominates their ground attack with 79 carries for 497 yards, and Terrance Owens has been reasonably accurate from the helm, 58-of-98 (59.2 percent). Fluellen is also the third-highest in receiving yards, so Ball State will have to key in heavily on the dual-featured back. Cassius McDowell has also hit teams for big yardage with 113 yards on just 13 carries.
