The third week of NFL action allowed for perspective to be had about certain teams. The Steelers have been the best team so far, and it doesn’t matter who is playing quarterback. The Chiefs are the NFL’s biggest surprise, and they’re already 2 games ahead in the AFC West. The Patriots’ defense is going to have serious problems this year. The Saints are still a good football team, but seem to have lost their magic. And neither Minnesota nor Dallas is dead yet.
The week 4 opening lines have been posted. Make sure to visit our NFL lines page to compare lines from a multitude of sportsbooks. Here’s a small sampling of Sunday’s action.
Pittsburgh (-1 ½) vs. Baltimore – The best game of the day takes place in Pittsburgh. The home Steelers opened as 1 ½ point favorites, and although a couple books have moved to a single point or even a pick, several are still keeping the game at 1 ½ points. The total started at 36 ½, but is down to 34 ½ points. This game features two of the Leagues best defenses. The Steel Curtain has been suffocating. The Ravens have been good, but had a tough time stopping the Browns, who were down to a backup quarterback and running back. Byron Leftwich should be able to go, but Charlie Batch had 3 first half touchdowns against Tampa Bay.
Atlanta (-7) vs. San Francisco – The Falcons opened as 7 point favorites. 5 Dimes and Sportbet have moved to 8 points, but most books are holding steady. Atlanta is coming off a huge win over the defending champion Saints. San Fran should’ve beaten New Orleans the week before, but shot themselves in the foot one too many times. The Falcons only loss has been in overtime at Pittsburgh. The Niners dropped to 0-3 after getting thumped by the surprising Chiefs.
Seattle (-1 ½) at St. Louis – The Seahawks opened as 1 ½ point road favorites, and while 5 Dimes and Sportbet have dropped this to a pick game, the other books are currently holding at 1 ½ points. Both teams are coming off big wins. Seattle held on against San Diego, while the Rams beat the Redskins going away. The Seahawks are not as good on the road as they are at home. Stephen Jackson’s health is a concern for the Rams. The star running back left Sunday’s game with a groin injury.
Indianapolis (-7) at Jacksonville – Do you remember when this used to be an intriguing game? What happened to the Jaguars? The visiting Colts opened as 7 point favorites, and 5 Dimes and Sportbet have moved this up to 8 points. Indy had a nice showing in Denver, especially the defense inside the redzone. Austin Collie is developing into a dangerous compliment to Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. Peyton Manning is a model of consistency. The Jags followed up one blowout loss with another, the latest coming at home to Michael Vick and the Eagles. Will Jack Del Rio make it through the season?
Philadelphia (-6 ½) vs. Washington – The Eagles started as 6 ½ point favorites and the line has wavered a bit, but most are sticking at 6 ½ points so far. It’s the Michael Vick show in Philadelphia. After being named starter, Vick responded with 4 touchdowns. And what about the Philly defense? They finally got their act together, holding the hapless Jags to a field goal. The Redskins got beat up by one of the NFL’s worst teams. Can Mike Shanahan and company regroup to compete with the upstart Eagles? Welcome home, Donovan McNabb.
