The Michigan Wolverines opened its season with a 40-21 victory over Middle Tennessee State University. Week 2 sees it take on Army as 23-point favorites according to NCAA football oddsmakers at 5dimes. The over/under is set at 47 total points, and the game kicks off at 11 AM CST Saturday on FOX.
MICHIGAN
Michigan reaped early dividends from its no-huddle offense and Shea Patterson. The quarterback passed 17 of 29 for 203 yards and three touchdowns in the victory over Middle Tennessee. Patterson rushed another nine times for 28 yards, and Michigan picked up 233 rushing yards in the game. Patterson is coming off a 2,600-yard 26-touchdown season. He is familiar with this offense that has been installed from his time at Ole Miss before transferring to Michigan.
Zach Charbonnet led the way with 90 yards on eight attempts (11.3 yards-per-carry), Christian Turner had 11 carries for 49 yards and backup QB Dylan McCaffrey served as a No. 3 back rushing eight times for 42 yards. Charbonnet was ranked the No. 1 running back in the 2019 class, and he appears to be ready to step in as a No. 1 back now, even if Turner still did rush three times more in the game.
Tarlk Black lead all Michigan receivers with four receptions for 80 yards and a TD. Nico Collins added 49 yards and a touchdown and Sean McKeon had two catches for 37 yards and a TD. Michigan’s defense limited the Blue Raiders to 234 passing yards and 67 via the rush. Middle Tennessee averaged just 2.4 yards-per-carry on its 28 attempts. The Michigan defense lost defensive linemen Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich, and it is without Devin Bush Jr and lost its DL coach, but despite all that turnover, it looked good. Michigan might not be the same defensive monster without Bush, that was proven in its Bowl loss last season, but it is still a defensive powerhouse and Middle Tennessee could not muster much against it.
ARMY
Army began its season with a 14-7 victory over Rice. The Black Knights threw just eight passes in the game, completing three for 53 yards. Starting quarterback Kelvin Hopkins Jr. rushed a team-high 21 times for 80 yards and a touchdown, and one of his three passes was a TD reception caught by Kell Walker. Sandon McCoy rushed 20 times for 70 yards, and Christian Hayes, Walker, and Artrice Hobbs IV contributed another 70 yards on nine total rushes between them. Army limited Rice to just 62 passing yards and 181 rushing yards while picking up 231 itself via the rush and 53 from its passing game.
Hopkins is now in his senior season at Army and last year he passed for 1,026 yards with an 11-yard-per-reception average and he rushed for another 1,017 yards with 4.9 yards-per-carry. It was his biggest season at Army since contributing sparsely as a sophomore in 2019 and sitting his freshman year as a redshirt.
