Frank Beamer leads his Virginia Tech Hokies to Beantown to take on Frank Spaziani and the Boston College Eagles. Virginia Tech started off the season 0-2 with losses to Boise St and James Madison. They righted the ship somewhat with a 49-27 win against East Carolina last week. While the Hokies are pretty much eliminated for playing fr the BCS Championship, they can still win the wide-open ACC and clinch a bid in one of the other BCS games. Boston College is 2-0 and can also win the ACC. Virginia Tech is 11-4 straight up against Boston College in the last 15, but the Eagles are 8-4 against the college football point spread in the last 12. This is the conference opener for both teams.
It is difficult to know what to make of Virginia Tech’s 0-2 start. The game against Boise can be excused, i suppose. It was a “neutral” site game, though it was played in nearby Maryland, and Boise was ranked #3 in the preseason rankings. it was an exciting game. Boise ended up winning on a last second touchdown pass from Kellen Moore 33-30. The next week the Hokies were embarrassed losing at home to FCS James Madison 21-16. Was the James Madison game an aberration, the result of an emotional letdown from such a heartbreaking loss on short rest, or were the Hokies overrated? In the Hokies’ three games this season quarterback Tyrod Taylor has throw for 501 yards 5 touchdowns and an interception. He also leads the team in rushing with 191 yards. The Hokies rushing game is averaging 205 yards a game, good for 26th in the country. Though Taylor has more yards, Ryan Williams is the workhorse of the rushing attack. he has 139 yards on 46 carries with 3 touchdowns. Boston College also has to stop Jarrett Boykin who has 10 catches for 229 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Hokies aren’t as dominant on defense this year as they normally are. though they did hold East Carolina to only a field goal in the second half. The Hokies trailed 24-21 at the break and outscored the Pirates 28-3 in the second half to win 49-27.
Boston College had last week off after opening with wins over Weber St and Kent St. This will be their first real test of the season. The Eagles haven’t been very good on offense. Dave Shinskie is the top quarterback with 399 yards in two games with 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Though backup Mike Marscovetra has thrown for 42 yards, a touchdown and a pick in spot action in two games so far. The Eagle rushing attack is not much better, gaining only 275 yards in two games. The Eagles are led by tailback Montel Harris who has 48 carries for 195 yards and a touchdown. On defense the Eagles are led by linebacker Mark Herzlich, who missed last year due to having cancer. The Eagles struggled against Kent St and were only leading 6-3 at halftime before expanding their lead to 26-7 in the fourth. The Flashes scored a late touchdown to make the final 26-13.
The ACC hasn’t looked great so far this season, losing some high-profile match-ups thus far. Both of these teams have the talent to compete for division titles in the wide open ACC. This could be a preview of the ACC Championship game in December. We are still looking at possible releasing a play on this game to our premium members.
