The Seattle Seahawks are a solid Saturday Bet according to Wise Guys like the Maddux Sports handicappers.
The first true weekend of the NFL preseason is set to kick off. Gambling enthusiasts, starved by the seemingly endless off-season, are as ready as NFL teams to get the season going.
As is always the case, preseason football is a difficult read for bettors. How long will starters play? How conservative will coaches be? Who has the better depth? Who is shelved with injury? Often times, these and other questions make preseason wagering more challenging than regular season games.
However, amidst the challenges inherent in preseason betting there are some line movements that can be beneficial to the bettor with a careful eye. For example, this weekend offers two games that have seen line movements with reverse action. Reverse action, simply put, is when the line has moved opposite the public favorite. These are great situations for gamblers.
Whenever a line moves away from the public trend the only legitimate reason to explain the movement is that wiseguys – professional bettors – are solidly behind the other team, the team playing the public favorite. This weekend, the wiseguys are backing Seattle.
In Seattle, the Seahawks welcome the Tennessee Titans to town, with the Titans being backed by almost 80% of public betting. The opening line listed the Seahawks as 3 ½ point favorites, and with Tennessee garnering 80% of bets, logic would dictate that the line would drop to 2 or 2 ½ points. But the line has swung the other way. The Seahawks have jumped to 4 – and in some books – 4 ½ point favorites. That movement represents reverse action. Our NFL football lines page can keep you up to date on the biggest point spread moves of the day.
Obviously popular bettors are being influenced by last year’s performances. The Titans had an awful start to the season, losing their first six games. But they finished strong, going 8-2 over their final ten games. Seattle, like Tennessee, started the season poorly. Unlike Tennessee, however, Seattle finished the season poorly too, ending up 5-11. With expectations higher in Tennessee than in Seattle, the majority of bettors are siding with the superior Titans.
But 2010 is a new season. And in Seattle, Mike Holmgren is out and Pete Carroll is in. After Pete Carroll’s success at USC and the dismal play of last year’s Seahawks, Seattle will be rocking with anticipation. The coaches, players, and fans will be amped-up for this one, even if it’s a preseason game. This is the start of a new era. Without doubt, this is a bigger game for Seattle than for Tennessee.
Also supporting a play on the Seahawks is their recent preseason performance. Over the past two years Seattle is 7-1 straight up in preseason games, going 4-0 at home. On the flip side Tennessee is a respectable 6-3, but only 1-3 on the road. Tonight, look for the lowly Seahawks to fly high and cover.
