The Rays will look to regain sole possession of first place in the AL East standings in the series finale against the Twins.

Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays

Minnesota captured a 2-1 victory in the third game of this four-game series against the Rays at Tropicana Field, overcoming a blown save in the ninth from new closer Matt Capps.  “An exciting baseball game,” manager Ron Gardenhire said.  “Well pitched by both sides.”  Catcher Joe Mauer was back in the lineup for a second straight day, after missing two games with a shoulder injury.  The win last night snapped a four-game losing streak for the Twins against the Rays, which was their longest losing streak against Tampa Bay since August 2001.  The club is 21-18 in day games this season (-50) and the total is 17-18 O/U in those contests.  Minnesota has also played just three games this season in domes due to moving into Target Field from the Metrodome this year, posting a 1-2 mark in this series thus far (-40).  The Twins are still a dismal 13-18 against AL East opponents.

The first weekend of interleague play is in the books and these two teams are ready for an AL East showdown to kick off an exciting week.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays

Boston won two of three games in Philadelphia, including an 8-3 victory on Sunday over Phillies ace Roy Halladay, grabbing a series victory in the year’s first interleague weekend.  The Red Sox will now continue a six-game road trip, heading to Tropicana Field to take on the first-place Rays.  The road team will certainly have revenge on its mind, after being swept by the Rays at Fenway in a four-game home series back on 4/16-4/19/10.  During that series, Boston was outscored 24-9, losing all four games as a home favorite (-592).  Being 10-14 against the division has done the Red Sox no favors (-780), as they are 8.5 games back of the Rays heading into this three-game set.

Today we take a look at what should be 2 of the best games of the day.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Tampa Bay travels to the Bronx in an unfamiliar role this late in the season, carrying an MLB-best record of 28-11 (+1,014) into this series.  To put the current record in perspective, the Rays didn’t win their 28th game of the 2009 season until June 4 (56th game).   The Rays are 1-2 against the Yankees in 2010, losing the series at Tropicana Field in April.  Overall, the team has dropped 10 of the last 15 meetings, including seven straight at Yankee Stadium.  Their fortune may change in New York this time around, carrying an impressive 15-4 road mark (+1,050) into this division battle.
