The Yankees may have the best record in baseball, but it’s not because of the previous meetings with today’s opponent.

Toronto Blue Jays at New York Yankees

Toronto may be 14 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the AL East standings heading into this weekend, but the club has a 7-5 season series advantage coming into this three-game set at the Rogers Centre.  The Blue Jays are also the first club to hit 200 home runs this season, led by outfielder Jose Bautista.  The Major League leader with 43 home runs was named the AL Offensive Player of the Month in August for clubbing 12 long balls and driving in 24 runs. The club is averaging 4.4 runs per game on the road and hitting for a combined .241 average, but those numbers go up to 5.0 runs and a .258 mark against right-handed starters.  Toronto has posted a disappointing 8-13 mark as a road underdog of +125 to +150 this season (-230) and the total is 11-9 O/U in those games.  It’s also important to note that the team is 30-25 against division opponents in 2010 (+1,080).

The Rays look to keep pace with the Yankees in playing the second game of this three-game set at Tropicana Field.

Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays

Toronto fell 6-2 in the series opener against the Rays at Tropicana Field, with a costly error by second baseman Aaron Hill proving too difficult to fight back from.  “I’m not going to fault my guys for playing hard,” Monday night’s starter Brett Cecil said.  “I’ve got to take it upon myself.”  The Blue Jays had won four straight against the Rays in the season series, but now trail 7-6 with last night’s loss.  Offensively, the team has been led by outfielder Jose Bautista, recently named AL Player of the Week for August 23-29.  Over those seven days, he hit .500 with eight extra-base hits and four home runs.  Bautista currently leads the majors with 42 home runs.  The club owns a 33-36 mark away from the Rogers Centre this season, including a 12-11 record on the road.  Toronto is a disappointing 7-13 as a road underdog of +125 to +150 this season (-360) and the total is 10-9 O/U in those contests.

The series finale finds a pair of solid right-handers facing off against each other at Fenway Park this afternoon.

Toronto Blue Jays at Boston Red Sox

Toronto fell 5-4 in 11 innings in Saturday night’s contest against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, as reliever Casey Janssen served up a walk off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning.  “I just kind of talked myself out of a pitch,” Janssen said.  “You can second guess.  If I get him out, it’s the right pitch.  If I don’t, then it’s the wrong pitch.”  The Blue Jays are 4-10 against the Red Sox this season, including a 2-3 mark on the road in this series.  The club is 13-27 versus Boston dating back to the middle of the 2008 season, but they’ve actually won five of the last eight contests at Fenway Park.  Toronto dropped below .500 on the road with yesterday’s loss, currently standing at 33-34 away from the Rogers Centre (+590).  The Blue Jays are still bring a solid 27-21 mark against division opponents into the series finale (+1,120) and the total is 22-25 O/U in those contests.  It’s important to note that the team is 7-10 as a road underdog of +125 to +150 in 2010 (-60) and 18-31 in this situation the last three years (-670).

The Red Sox withstood the power of the Blue Jays in this first game of this series, as a pair of right-handers face off at the Rogers Centre.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays

Boston moved its record to 9-2 against the Blue Jays in capturing a 7-5 victory on Tuesday night at the Rogers Centre.  “You know what?  Tonight was like our whole season,” manager Terry Francona said.  “It wasn’t perfect. But we kept playing.”  The Red Sox have won eight of their last 12 road contests and have a 23-16 record away from Fenway Park since May 22.  The club sits five games in the divisional race and just 4.5 back in the Wild Card.  Boston is 6-1 on artificial turf this season, managing to average 6.5 runs and hit for a combined .291 average in those contests.  The team is a fantastic 7-1 on the road with a money line of -100 to -125 this season (+590), but falls off to a 26-32 mark in this situation the last three years (-1,020).  The Red Sox evened up their record against divisional opponents (23-23, -400) and the total in those games is 25-18 O/U.

AL East rivals will battle it out in a series in hopes of gaining ground on the Rays and Yankees.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays

Boston failed to pick up any ground on the first place Yankees, splitting a four-game series in the Bronx, as the team sits six games back in the divisional race.  “We’re leaving here with a good taste in our mouths,” reliever Daniel Bard said.  “We didn’t move up, but to stay where you’re at is kind of an accomplishment.”  The Red Sox have won seven of their last 11 road games and are 22-16 away from Fenway Park since May 22.  The bullpen has been a major strength over the last 13 games, posting a 1.32 ERA and holding opponents to a .144 average.  The club has posted a solid 8-4 record this year on artificial turf (+480), but is still a dismal 26-34 over the last three seasons (-880).  Boston has also compiled a winning 20-16 mark against left-handed starters this season (+110), averaging 5.5 runs per game and hitting for a combined .271 average.
