The Beavers are a solid college football pick offering value on the moneyline
The TCU Horned Frogs and Oregon State Beavers are two teams that consistently outperform expectations. Year in and year out, these two clubs are at or near the top of their respective conference, the Mountain West and Pac 10. Last year TCU ran the regular season table, losing to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. Oregon State was a game away from the Rose Bowl, but a loss to bitter in-state rival Oregon sent the Beavers to the Las Vegas Bowl. Oregon State was manhandled by BYU, likely the result of a post-Oregon hangover.

TCU Football in the Mounatin West Conference
TCU is the favorite to win the Mountain West Conference
The past two years have been banner years for the Mountain West conference in football. Two years ago Utah finished an undefeated regular season by upsetting Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. Last year TCU narrowly lost to fellow undefeated upstart Boise St in the Fiesta Bowl. In fact it could be argued that last year the Mountain West was stronger than the Big East or perhaps even the ACC.

Fiesta Bowl
TCU (-7.5) vs. Boise State
8:00 pm ET

This is the bowl I have been looking forward to more than any other (though I still think it would have been better to have these teams play Cincinnati and Florida instead of each other again). I really haven’t got a good sense of how this one is going to turn out, but I am a bit surprised by the size of the spread. TCU played a significantly tougher schedule overall, but Boise State’s win over Oregon was the most impressive that either team had all year. That perceived slight could be good motivation for Boise State – not that they need it. It’s interesting to note that this is the first time that undefeated teams have played each other in a bowl game without a national championship on the line. Both teams have a lot to offer on both sides of the ball. TCU is brilliant defensively, and very good on offense as well. Boise State is explosive on offense, and showed against Oregon that they can smother on defense as well. Both teams are reasonably healthy, and they are both exceptionally well coached so they are going to be ready for his one. It was a brilliant game last year when the two teams met and TCU got a narrow win, and I expect even more from this one. The best individual matchup I will be keeping my eye on is Boise State QB Kellen Moore against TCU sack machine Jerry Hughes. Moore and the Broncos need to find a way to contain the TCU pass rush if they want to be able to come out on top.

So, when did the NFL become less competitive than non-conference college football? Six of the 12 games played yesterday were decided by at least four touchdowns. That’s preposterous. It makes for ridiculously uncompetitive action, and therefore mostly uninteresting football. The good news, I guess, is that at least we aren’t taking bets on the games – books are getting absolutely killed by favorites covering monster spreads like this. The favorites were 8-3-1 ATS this week, and the three biggest spreads, usually the public money magnets that the books feast on, all covered. Ouch. The disparity in the league this year is amazing. For the first time ever we have three undefeated teams through seven weeks of the season. On the flip side, we have three teams that could quite conceivably not win a game, and for a couple more it seems impossible to believe that they have already won one (or more). I thought salary caps were supposed to bring competitive balance?

There is a classic match-up on Thursday night in college football. That’s nothing new – the Thursday nights have been very good to us all year. This one, though, is a chance for a lot of people to see first-hand what the Mountain West has to offer (a lot, by the way). BYU travels to TCU in a game that will either significantly strengthen BYU’s claim to being a BCS Buster, or redeem TCU for a rough game against Oklahoma. The game started out with BYU favored by two, but has snce mved so that the home team s favored by as many as two. I’ve had this game crcled on my calendar for a long while now. I’ll leave the pick up to you, but here’s a look at three reasons you could justify betting on either eam:

It’s time for another look at the key games of interest this weekend from among the top 25. As always, I haven’t picked these out because they necessarily represent the best bets, and I am not representing them as picks. They are merely the ones with the storylines that I find most interesting this weekend. Without further ado:
