This important AL East series is up for grabs with two All-Star hurlers on the hill.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Tampa Bay picked up a 10-5 road victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.  The Rays have won three of their last four games against the Yankees in the Bronx, after losing six straight here.  The win improved the club’s record to 55-35 on the season and moved them to within two games of first place.  “It was a good day, we needed this win today and I was fortunate enough to get some big hits and score some runs,” Reid Brignac said.  Tampa Bay is now 23-11 against divisional foes this season (+1,020) and have won 13 of its last 16 games on the road against the AL East.  The Rays also took a 4-3 season series lead over the Bronx Bombers heading into the series finale this afternoon.

Some baseball teams love the hot, sticky days of July – it’s when they are at their best. Others play like they would rather be off at the beach or on the golf course or anywhere other than at the ballpark. There are of course many factors that go into how a team plays at a certain time, and you can get in trouble with broad assumptions. There are some teams, though, that consistently exhibit the same behavior in July. that doesn’t mean that you should be those teams blindly this year, but it does mean that you could keep an eye on them, and if they look like they are going to repeat their past performances then you could climb on board for the ride. Here’s a look at six teams that have shown particular love or hate for July in recent years. I’ll ignore teams like the Royals, Nationals and Orioles – they have been lousy in July, but they’ve been lousy every other month as well:

The Red Sox picked up tonight’s starter in the offseason for big games like this in the American League East division.

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox

Tampa Bay is floundering after starting the season with a fantastic 32-12 mark, going 12-19 over its last 31 games.  “We’ve had a rough patch…as bad as we’ve been playing and we’re only three games back, that’s got to say a lot about where we were,” pitcher Matt Garza said.  The Rays offense must get back on track, hitting .170 over their recent six-game homestand, including just .063 (7-for-50) with runners in scoring position.  Being away from Tropicana Field has been a winning combination for the young squad, posting an impressive 24-12 mark (+990) and averaging 5.6 runs.  This fits well with the road team winning all seven games between these clubs in 2010.  The Rays are surprisingly just 3-4 as a road underdog of +100 to +125 this season (-50).

Tampa Bay looks to avoid being swept by the NL West-leading San Diego Padres.

San Diego Padres at Tampa Bay Rays – Day

San Diego hammered out three home runs in picking up a 5-4 road victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night.  The victory moved the team’s record to 19-13 on the road (+1,060), giving them the top record in the National League away from home.  First baseman Adrian Gonzalez continued his red-hot month of June, as he ranks first in the National League in batting average in June (.428).  The rest of the league is starting to realize that the Padres are not a fluke this season, with the team recording a 75-54 record since August 1, 2009.  This series is the first for San Diego on artificial turf and it doesn’t seem to be bothering them with victories in the opening two games

The Braves offense has been piling up hits at a rapid pace and faces a struggling pitcher in tonight’s contest.

Tampa Bay Rays at Atlanta Braves

Tampa Bay had spent 52 consecutive days in first place in the AL East, but the Rays have shared the top spot with the Yankees the past three days.  The team has held the majors best record for a total of 59 games this season, 19 more than their first 12 years combined.  The offense has been scuffling since May 21, scoring two runs or fewer in a game nine times.  Manager Joe Maddon summed it up after his club dropped Game Two of the series, “The good thing is we won on Tuesday night and lost today, let’s try and win the series on Thursday.”  Tampa is still a dominating 23-9 on the road this season and has outscored opponents 188-110 away from Tropicana Field.

The Rays have come out of their little slump, when they lost eight of 13 games. They have won five of their last eight and still seem to be the team to beat. Rookie catcher John Jaso has provided some unexpected offense, hitting .307 and getting on base a lot.

The Rangers are marked as a home underdog on Saturday afternoon, as they host the best team in Major League Baseball.

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers

Tampa Bay is currently 2-2 on its current road trip after dropping the series opener at Texas, 9-6, at the Ballpark in Arlington.  Friday night’s defeat dropped the team to 26-3 on the year when producing five or more runs at the plate.  The Rays are still a dominating 21-7 on the road (+1,400), as only six major league teams have had a better road record after 28 games since 1900.  The team has outscored opponents 166-89 away from Tropicana Field.  Tampa is now 2-1 this month, but has compiled an impressive 37-18 record over the last three years during June (+1,790).  Total bettors need to be aware that the pitching staff has allowed only 198 runs this season, the fewest in the American League (25-28 O/U).

Needless to say, not all rotations in baseball are created equal. Some teams have five starting pitchers who are trustworthy and reliable to bettors, while others barely have one or two. You obviously need to handicap each pitcher separately – as opposed to betting on a team based on the strength or weakness of their rotation – but looking at the comparative strengths of the rotations from a betting perspective is still a useful and entertaining exercise. Here are my top four rotations in order:

The first weekend of interleague play is in the books and these two teams are ready for an AL East showdown to kick off an exciting week.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays

Boston won two of three games in Philadelphia, including an 8-3 victory on Sunday over Phillies ace Roy Halladay, grabbing a series victory in the year’s first interleague weekend.  The Red Sox will now continue a six-game road trip, heading to Tropicana Field to take on the first-place Rays.  The road team will certainly have revenge on its mind, after being swept by the Rays at Fenway in a four-game home series back on 4/16-4/19/10.  During that series, Boston was outscored 24-9, losing all four games as a home favorite (-592).  Being 10-14 against the division has done the Red Sox no favors (-780), as they are 8.5 games back of the Rays heading into this three-game set.
