This article will take a look at the American League West’s teams.  The Rangers are really the only team of relevance here, and the +115 set by Bodog speaks to that.  They won the division by 9 games last year and there’s no reason to not expect a repeat performance.  Odds are taken from Bodog’s baseball future’s betting.

The Yankees look to breakthrough against tonight’s starter in the first game of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

Seattle continues its season-high 12-game road trip in taking on the New York Yankees in a three-game set in the Bronx.  The Mariners are averaging a league-worst 3.3 runs per game and have managed to hit just 75 home runs this season.  The club is a solid 6-3 under interim manager Daren Brown and is coming off back-to-back wins over the Baltimore Orioles.  Offensively, the team is being led by second baseman Chone Figgins, as he has collected a hit in 15 of his past 21 games.  Over its past 11 games, the bullpen has allowed just seven earned runs on 18 hits in 28 innings, producing a 2.25 ERA in the process.  Seattle is 20-41 on the road overall this season (-1,810) and the total is 30-26 O/U over that span.  The Mariners are also 4-12 as a road underdog of +100 to +125 (-780) and 23-31 in this situation the last three years (-540).

Handicapping Us The Rest of the Year Should Be Easy, Fade Away
We are 100 games into the long, long major league baseball betting season. That means we are still more than two months away from the end of the year. For a lot of teams, though, these last 60 games are just something that have to be endured before the season draws to a merciful end. There are eight teams in the league that are at least 13 games out of first place in their divisions, and none are likely to be any closer by the time October arrives. Because they really don’t have a lot to play for it’s hard to trust that they are going to put forth any real effort in a given game. It would be easiest just to ignore these teams for the rest of the season, but they are more than a quarter of the whole league, so you don’t want to do that when baseball handicapping. What you need to be able to do instead is to evaluate the bad teams to determine which ones are going to be trying and which ones likely aren’t. Here are six things to consider as you try to do that:

No matter the price – bettors will flock to lay a wager on the Yankees, who are looking to avoid getting swept at home.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

Seattle picked up a 7-0 shutout victory over the best team in baseball, thanks to a brilliant performance by starting pitcher Felix Hernandez.  “He’s as good as we’ve seen all year,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi commented.  The Mariners finished June with a 14-13 record, their first winning month of the season.  Seattle has now won three straight games in New York for the first time since compiling a six-game winning streak from 2001-03.  Bettors will be interested to know, tonight was just the second time all season that starting pitchers Cliff Lee and Hernandez won back-to-back games in the rotation.

The Mariners send out another ace in trying to pick up a road series victory over the Yankees.

Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees

Seattle claimed a 7-4 road victory in the series opener over the New York Yankees, as stating pitcher Cliff Lee tallied his third straight complete game.  “It obviously is a very good lineup,” Lee said.  “They are the defending world champions and some additions make them that much better.”  The Mariners have won eight of their last 11 games, while looking to pick up a road series victory for the first time since April.  The club is looking to finish the month with a winning record, standing at 13-12 in June. Aces are wild in this AL West showdown featuring two teams that are searching for some type of momentum.

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels

Seattle is enjoying a three-game win streak (+307) and has won five of its last seven games due to an offensive resurgence.  Over the last six games, the offense is batting .391 with runners in scoring position, which is a dramatic difference from batting .235 in the first 41 games of the season.  This production has led to the team going over the total in four straight games for the first time all season.  OF Ichiro Suzuki has never been the team’s problem during the month of May, coming in with the highest career batting average for a player with a minimum of 300 plate appearances (.363).  The Mariners are 8-16 this month (-1,000) and have a horrible 27-54 (-3,110) record over the last three years in May.

Cliff Lee became the latest big name pitcher to make his spring training debut with a new team yesterday. It was a mixed bag – mostly, but not entirely, positive. The good news is that he lasted the full three innings he was scheduled for, and he did it without obvious issues with the foot injury that he had been struggling with up to this point. It’s also pretty positive that he only allowed one run and one walk in those five innings. The problem is that he allowed five hits in the outing, and his control  wasn’t exactly pinpoint throughout. It’s too early to panic, of course, and the Mariners just have to be relieved that their new toy isn’t broken, but we’ve been spoiled by so many good outings so far this spring that I guess I just hoped for more – especially considering how optimistic I am about the Mariners this year, and about their rotation in particular.
