Our last preview takes us out west to the National League West Division. It’s the Division that houses the World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants. They’re obviously heavily favored but we’ll take a look at them as well as their division rivals — if you can call them rivals at all. Though the Padres finished just 2 games behind the Giants, the odds indicate that they are serious underdogs. Bets and odds are taken from Sportsbook’s Baseball Futures betting.
Philadelphia has its trio of aces lined up to face the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship Series.
San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies
San Francisco defeated the Braves 3-1 in their National League Division Series and now the level of competition raises even further against the two-time defending Senior Circuit champion. The Giants are playing in the National League Championship Series for the fifth time and has logged a 2-2 series mark in their previous trips. Philadelphia’s staff may be getting all of the attention, but San Francisco’s starters finished with a 0.93 ERA in four games versus Atlanta, which was the third-lowest ERA by an NL rotation in a postseason series. The two teams split six games during the 2010 regular season with each team taking two of three games in its own ballpark. San Francisco won each of its final five road series beginning on July 5, posting the best road winning percentage in baseball with a .643 mark over that span (27-15).

The Padres dropped the first game of this crucial four-game set and will now look to hold onto their divisional lead at Petco Park.
San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres
San Francisco moved within a game of the San Diego Padres after a 7-3 win in Thursday’s opener at Petco Park. The Giants have a 3-9 record against the Padres this season, including a 2-4 mark at tonight’s venue. “We’ve had some bad times against these guys, so winning the first one is big for us,” said last night’s starter Matt Cain. Offensively, the team blasted four home runs in the spacious park, marking the first time in 61 games that San Francisco accomplished that feat. With their seventh win in nine games, the Giants also moved within a game of Wild Card pacesetter Atlanta. “They’re all important games…you just don’t want to put ‘do or die’ in any game,” manager Bruce Bochy stated. The club is now 37-36 on the road this season (+300) and the total is 39-33 O/U in those contests.
The Giants come into town for a huge NL West showdown that will go a long way in deciding the divisional race.
San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres
San Francisco enters this weekend series following a 3-1 loss in Arizona on Wednesday, ending a four-game winning streak and dropping the club two back in the Wild Card race. “We weren’t under the allusion that we were going to win the rest of the games,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “There’s some baseball left here.” Over the last nine games, the starting rotation has posted a 2.54 ERA and seven quality starts. The Giants have 22 games left on their schedule and are 36-37 on the road this season (+100). After beginning the year with a 8-19 record against the NL West, the team has bounced back nicely to pick up victories in 19 of its last 29 divisional contests. San Francisco is an even 12-12 as a road underdog of +100 to +125 (+130) and the total is 11-13 O/U in those games.
A pair of talented left-handers headline the second game of this three-game set in the Bay Area.
Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants
Cincinnati suffered an 11-2 blowout loss to the Giants in the first game of a three-game set at AT&T Park, but the team still remains atop the league in batting average and runs scored. “The main thing is for nobody to panic. It’s one game,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said after the game. “You want to win every game, but at this point we’re 5-2 on this road trip.” The club is 36-27 on the road this season (+1,140) and has a 10-4 record as a road underdog of +100 to +125 (+760). The team has won eight of their last 10 games and has produced a solid 15-6 record in August (+920), while the total stands at an even 10-10 O/U in those contests. Cincinnati is 13-6-1 in their previous 20 road series and has compiled a winning or .500 record on six of their nine road trips. It’s also important to note that the Reds are 23-17 when facing southpaw starters in 2010 and 72-67 in this situation the last three campaigns (+510).
