The first-place Reds are in position to win another series as they play the final game of a three-game set at PNC Park.

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates

Cincinnati fell 7-6 in the second game of this three-game set against the Pirates in Pittsburgh, but the club has still won five of its last eight games.  It’s also important to note that the Reds are 9-1-1 in their previous 11 series, including 4-0-1 in their first five series of the second half.  The team hasn’t made the playoffs since 1995 and haven’t finished above .500 since 2000, currently features the NL’s top lineup and best defense.  “This is why I came here, for this point and purpose,” manager Dusty Baker said.  All-Star first baseman Joey Votto didn’t start for a second straight game on Tuesday with a sprained wrist.  Cincinnati is a dominating 30-17 against division opponents this season and the total is 21-22 O/U in those games.  In 36 day games, the Reds have compiled an even 18-18 mark and the total is 10-21 O/U.

A scheduled off-day for both teams has turned into a Monday afternoon contest due to a rainout on Wednesday.

Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago is playing its ninth game (2-6) in a stretch of 12-straight against NL Central opponents that lasts through June 10.  The Cubs are currently 1-4 on its current road trip, after dropping Sunday’s contest, 6-3, in Houston to the Astros.  The defeat dropped the Cubs to a 3-23 mark when scoring three or fewer runs this season, while they are 22-7 when scoring four or more.  Chicago is slated to face a southpaw on Monday, which has been a recipe of success in the last four opportunities.  The team is actually hitting .267 overall against lefties this season, a mark that is 12 points higher than its overall season average (.255).

Interleague Facts of Note

  • In 2009, AL clubs compiled a .263 batting average with 315 home runs, 1,206 runs scored and a 3.89 ERA. NL clubs batted .257 with 249 home runs, 1,061 runs scored and a 4.45 ERA.
  • The New York Yankees hold the MLB’s best all-time Interleague record at 133-95 (.583), followed by Minnesota at 132-96 (.548). The Florida Marlins own the NL’s best all-time Interleague mark at 120-99.
  • Seattle OF Ichiro Suzuki led all batters with 33 hits during interleague play last season.
  • St. Louis 1B Albert Pujols smashed an MLB-high nine home runs against the AL last year. He also leads all active players (400 AB min) with a .355 average during interleague play.
  • Seven pitchers total posted a perfect 3-0 record, including Seattle ace Felix Hernandez, who also managed a 0.84 ERA.
  • Two of Friday’s starting pitchers check in with the lowest ERA during interleague play with a minimum of 150 innings. Boston SP John Lackey at 2.63 and Los Angeles Angels SP Joel Pineiro at 3.25.

Baltimore Orioles
  • The Orioles are coming off a 4-4 homestand against Seattle (2-1), Cleveland (1-2) and Kansas City (1-1).  Baltimore is 11-11 in its last 22 games, after starting the year 2-16.
  • IF Ty Wigginton has set a team-high by hitting in nine straight games, going 14-for-36 (.389) with two homers and six RBI.
  • Team has posted a 3-9 record versus left-handed starters this season and 10-18 against righties.
  • In their last 15 games, the Orioles have been held to one run five times and were held scoreless once.  Overall, the team has had 12 games this year where they scored one run or fewer.
  • Defense has made just one error in the last 62.2 innings of play.  The Orioles are fifth in the AL in fielding percentage (.984).
  • After going 1-6 in their first seven one-run games, the O’s have won six of their last seven one-run games.
  • Three Orioles starters rank in the Top 26 in the AL in strikeout-to-walk ratio.  Kevin Milwood is 10th (3.20), Jeremy Guthrie is 11th (3.00) and Brian Matusz is 26th (2.17)
  • In five career starts against Texas, SP Jeremy Guthrie is 3-0 with a 3.16 ERA.  He has not started a game in Arlington since 7/6/07.
  • The right-hander snapped his career-high eight game losing streak on May 8 at Minnesota, outdueling Minnesota LHP Francisco Liriano.  He has won his last two starts since the skid.
