Matt Ryan Atlanta Falcons
Matt Ryan and the Falcons are 2 point road favorites on the point spread against the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers begin the 2010 regular season at home on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger due to a four-game suspension for breaking the NFL’s personal conduct policy.  Second-year player Dennis Dixon will start in Roethlisberger’s place for the Steelers, who have not been home underdogs in the regular season since 2004.

Once again Ben Roethlisberger put the Steelers in a tough position this year
One of the most interesting storylines of the NFL preseason – one the few truly interesting ones, really – has been the quarterback situation in Pittsburgh. Ben Roethlisberger is likely to see his suspension decreased from six games to four, but the team – a serious Super Bowl contender in the eyes of many – will have to play without their biggest star for at least a month. That means that they have to find a guy who can not only start those four or six games, but who can keep the team’s hopes and dreams alive until Big Ben is back in action. This is a unique situation to consider, and a fun one to speculate about. It’s also an important situation for NFL handicappers to think about because there is going to be a lot of attention paid to Pittsburgh games, and there will be a chance for value if you call the games right. As you get ready for the regular season to start here are four things to consider about the situation:

Even with preseason NFL games, nothing can be easy.  This past weekend proved no exception. I e-mailed a friend of mine who covers an NFL team and wanted to get a gauge on the state of the team going into the Giants-Ravens game.  “Why would you bet on these preseason games?” was his response.  Quite frankly, I replied, that if you pick your spots, you can find some good spots. Unfortunately, he was no help with his game. I was on my own to pick out some good plays.  As usual, the NFL serves up more ups and downs than your county fair roller coaster.

Big Ben and the Steelers are 2/2.5 point road favorites.
All eyes will be on the quarterbacks in Sunday’s nationally televised preseason matchup between the Denver Broncos (0-2) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0) at Investco Field at Mile High.  However, one of them is still expected to be held out one more game as his Broncos host the Steelers as 2-point underdogs.  Be sure to shop around though via our live NFL odds page as this game has been seen anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 depending on the sportsbook.

Big Ben makes his preseason debut tonight as the Steelers are 4 point road favorites.
The story of Saturday’s preseason game between the New York Giants (1-0) and Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0)  is all about franchise quarterbacks, one who will play and the other who will not.  Both were drafted in 2004, and each has led his respective team to at least one Super Bowl championship.

Lions Vs Steelers Preseason Betting Preview
Will Big Ben Play Tonight? Expect the betting odds to tick up a hair if Tomlin says he is getting some snaps.
The big question for the Pittsburgh Steelers going into their preseason opener against the Detroit Lions is, will we see QB Ben Roethlisberger?  Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin refused to comment on whether or not the troubled signal caller will play, but his team will still enter the game as home favorites at -3 on the NFL point spread regardless.  Unlike his predecessor Bill Cowher, Tomlin has been an outstanding coach in the preseason with a 10-3 career mark.

NFL Betting Season Win TotalsThis is a very interesting time when it comes to NFL win totals betting. They have been posted for a while now, so the initial action has bet out any obvious errors, but the public hasn’t yet paid a lot of attention to them. That likely means that the futures are somewhat more accurate now than they will be before the fans jump on the public teams. Because of that, looking at the odds right now shows us some very interesting trends and opinions. Based on the line movement and the prices available there are hints of some strong and interesting opinions held by those who have made bets so far. Here are 11 win totals that have seemed to have one-sided action so far. In each case the one-sided action can be a clue that the total is likely to change as the season nears, and it gives us something to think about when it comes to the teams (odds are form Bodog):

Now that the first series of the season is out of the way in baseball, we have our first chance to look at what we have seen so far and which players have done things that we like. On guy who really jumps out on that front is Vernon Wells. The Toronto slugger is talented – MVP talented – but there is a disconnect somewhere near where his brain meets his body, and he has never really been able to capitalize on what he is capable of. So far this year, though, he’s on fire – four home runs in three games, and in just 10 at-bats he has six hits and seven RBIs. With guys like Adam Lind and Travis Snyder in town Wells doesn’t have to be the only big bat for the Jays, and expectations aren’t very high for the team, so maybe he’s finally in a situation where he can have the massive year he is capable of. He’ll be worth watching.
