Carson Palmer Cincinnati Bengals
Our offense is going to be much better with my new weapons
The Cincinnati Bengals will be more exciting this season thanks to the signing of WR Terrell Owens, but whether or not that will result in back-to-back playoff appearances remains to be seen.  The Bengals will have a very difficult time duplicating last year’s perfect 6-0 record in the AFC North, but the good news is that the Pittsburgh Steelers will be without starting QB Ben Roethlisberger for up to six games.  The bad news is Roethlisberger will still play them twice.

My 12-7 ATS record last year proves I cover for bettors just as often as my predecessor Mr Dungy did
The problem right now for most sports bettors is that the football season is so close that’s alluring, camps are underway, week 1 NFL lines are posted, but there is still a whole pile of time to kill between now and the first meaningful kickoff. Far too long. In  an attempt to kill some of that time while still being productive, I thought I’d take a look back at the teams that have been consistently good against the spread over the last five season, and those that have been consistently bad. The reasoning is that the five year time frame smooths out some of the flukes and unexplainable one year glitches – like the year Cleveland was actually good – and gives us a more meaningful long term picture. Before we look at what I found, I’m going to be like a bad comedian and tell the punchline before the joke – it’s really striking here that the teams that have been consistently solid against the spread are the teams that have been consistently very good, and the ones that have consistently burned money are the terrible teams. In this regard at least, the betting public is right in their NFL pick loyalties:

dallas cowboys football teamThere is no denying the talent of the Dallas Cowboys, but do they have leadership and coaching to take the next step and get to the Super Bowl?  That is highly debatable, especially considering that rookie WR Dez Bryant is already having issues with authority in training camp.  If nobody steps up to assume more responsibility and lead the Cowboys, not even a favorable schedule will translate to more success than last year and save Wade Phillips’ job following this season.

Once Again I Put the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Tough Position
The biggest question surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers this season obviously revolves around how they will play early on during QB Ben Roethlisberger’s six-game suspension.  Even though there is a chance that Roethlisberger’s suspension could get reduced to four games, Pittsburgh will ultimately need to decide whether veteran Byron Leftwich or youngster Dennis Dixon will take the reins heading into the season and navigate the team through the first part of the schedule.

The San Francisco 49ers have been a popular darkhorse pick the last couple years, but it’s put up or shut up time now for head coach Mike Singletary’s squad.  Singletary has anointed Alex Smith the unquestioned starter at QB this season, and he already has the second-most snaps under center in the division behind Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck.  With Arizona’s Kurt Warner retired, this seems to finally be the year for the 49ers to strike gold and return to the playoffs.

Aaron Rodgers Green Bay PackersThe Green Bay Packers showed a lot of promise last season under the leadership of second-year starting QB Aaron Rodgers on their way to an impressive 11-5 record and playoff berth.  Unfortunately, it was their former QB Brett Favre who kept them from winning the NFC North and will lead the defending division champs if he decides to come back yet again this year.  Favre’s Minnesota Vikings are expected to be the only major divisional roadblock for the Packers, who are +125 to win the NFC North, 6/1 to win the NFC and 12/1 to win Super Bowl XLV.

Vernon Davis Expected To Have a Big Year for the San Franciso 49ers
Coming off an 8-8 2009 season with a +49 point differential, the 2010 regular season win total on the 49ers has been set at 8.5.  Most early action seems to be on the 49ers over with odds of -140 listed on Bodog.  Are these early bettors on to something or off the mark?  Are the 49ers an inexperienced raw team with an unproven quarterback who will struggle or a talented hard-nosed squad ready to break out?  The Bookbeater loves the over.

2010 San Diego Chargers
Darren Sproles Leads the Chargers High Powered Offense
Despite a surprisingly disappointing start and finish to the 2009-10 NFL season, the San Diego Chargers still find themselves with plenty to look forward to this year as one of the top favorites at 10/1 to win Super Bowl XLV in Dallas.  The defending AFC West champion Chargers closed out the LaDainian Tomlinson era with a tough 17-14 divisional playoff loss at home to the New York Jets back on January 17 following 11 straight regular-season wins.

Jared Allen Minnesota VikingsNFL teams are absolutely obsessed with the defensive line. Finding players who can consistently provide pass rushing pressure is very hard to do, but teams use a lot of draft picks and spend millions on free agents in an attempt to do so. A team that can pressure the quarterback gets all sorts of attention form the public and the media. One that can stuff the run is a bit more under the radar, but no less valued by team management. The best way for a defensive front to provide apply pressure is a topic of much debate and contention, and there are about as many advocates of 3-4 schemes as those that back a 4-3.
