Now, we’re moving on to the National League.  This first NL preview will take a look at the East division, a division thoroughly dominated by the Phillies and Braves.  While the Phillies reached the NLCS last year, it will probably be the Braves that will emerge as the team in the NL East over the next 3 to 5 years, as the Phillies are long in the tooth and low on prospects; indeed, their run is coming to an end.  Odds and bets are taken from Bodog.

The Braves will look to improve upon their 18-1-2 home series record this season with the first of three games against the Mets at Turner Field.

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

New York finished off its current homestand with a 3-3 record and now embark on a 10-game trip, which will serve as the team’s longest this season.  The Mets record has also not been more than one game above or below .500 since July 31, when they were 53-51.  The starting staff has been doing its part, posting a 3.42 ERA since the All-Star break, the fourth-lowest mark in the majors during that span.  Only Oakland (2.66), San Diego (3.36) and Atlanta (3.40) have a lower ERA.  The club has a 23-29 record against divisional opponents this season (-850) and the total is 23-28 O/U in those contests.  New York is winless in eight games this season as a road underdog of +150 to +175 (-800) and 5-12 in this situation the last three years (-390).

The Mets send their ace to the hill in trying to capture a three-game series from the Rockies at Citi Field.

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets

Colorado picked up a 6-2 victory in the second game of this series over the Mets at Citi Field.  The club will be looking to pick up its first road series win over today’s opponent in more than eight years.  The Rockies are 25-17 in games against left-handed starters this season (+500), after posing a 27-26 mark in 2009.  Offensively, the team has 162 RBIs versus southpaws, which is the most in the National League.  The lineup is being led by outfielder Carlos Gonzalez having the second-most extra-base hits since the All-Star break in the league (16) and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki batting .375 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 14 games since returning from the disabled list.  Colorado is a dismal 4-11 as a road underdog of +125 to +150 (-560) and the total in those games stands at 6-9 O/U in that span.

The Braves lead in the NL East is now just 2.5 games as they host the struggling Mets at Turner Field.

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves

New York has dropped 15 of its last 21 games, including a 14-1 blowout loss to the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.  “It definitely hurts your pride a little bit when you perform in that manner,” manager Jerry Manuel said.  “We didn’t pitch, we didn’t hit, we didn’t play defense.”  The Mets now head to a field where they’ve dropped 15 of their last 20 meetings.  The team has taken five of the first eight meetings between the two clubs, but they’ve yet to win a season series over the Braves since the 2006 season.  Offensively, the club is hitting just .210 with 54 runs scored and 15 home runs in 17 games since the All-Star break.  New York is 19-20 against divisional opponents this season (-350) and the total is 16-22 O/U in those contests.  The Mets will try to avoid dropping to the .500 mark for the first time since June 2, when the team stood at 27-27.

A pair of dominating left-handers take center stage in the Big Apple on ESPN.

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets

St. Louis is set to play the second game of this three game series this evening, as part of a six-game, seven-day road trip.  The Cardinals fell 8-2 in defeat on Tuesday evening at Citi Field and the team is now 8-4 since the All-Star break.  The club is batting .294 and averaging 6.0 runs per game in its 55 wins, while hitting just .223 and scoring 2.5 runs a game in 45 losses.  Surprisingly, the team picked up a loss with starting pitcher Adam Wainwright on the hill, as they are 40-23 in games involving the right-hander, Chris Carpenter and tonight’s starter.  It was the fifth time in 11 road starts this season that the Cards have scored no runs or one run while Wainwright was in the game.  The lineup went 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners on the night.  St. Louis has posted a 2-3 mark as a road underdog of +100 to +125 this season (-90) and an even 29-29 the last three years (+250).

Tonight’s matchup features two teams that are desperately trying to stay within striking distance in their respective divisions.

New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers

New York stumbles into a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers after losing 4-3 in 14 innings on Wednesday and getting swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The Mets are dismal 19-30 on the road this season (-930) and have fallen 6.5 games back of the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves.  New York is 3-10 in its last 13 games and 8-16 over its last 24 games.  Offensively, the team has been held to four runs or fewer in 12 straight games, as the club has compiled a 3-9 record over that stretch.  In their last seven games, the Mets have managed to score first just once, with the team being 9-28 when the opponent draws first blood.  Expect a possible bounce back performance in tonight’s change of venue, with the team being 5-3 after three or more consecutive losses this season (+340) and 26-19 in this spot the last three years (+1,240).
