Izzo's crew looks like the best team in a loaded Big Ten and check in at #2 in our rankings
Going into the NCAA Tournament last year everything looked good for the Michigan State Spartans (28-9, 14-4 Big Ten). They finished tied for first with Purdue in the Big Ten and in last NCAA Tournament had made it to the national title game. Thus, most folks expected the Spartans to go all the way. But it all came to a screeching halt when Michigan State lost to Butler 52-50 in the Final Four. How good are the Spartans this year? There’s a lot expected of this team that has not missed a bid to the Big Dance since 1997. One thing is just about certain, they won’t miss one this season either.

When it comes to looking for teams to get behind as a bettor in college football, there is one type I like most. There are the teams that everyone knows are good, and the ones that are really lousy, but there is only so much opportunity in those. What I really like is the teams that are likely to be solidly better than people expect them to be. The public is very quick to develop expectations for teams, and those expectations aren’t always grounded in truth. If you can spot teams that are better than the public perception of them than you can often find very attractive value. Here are five teams that we pegged as potentially under-appreciated by the public prior to the season and as we head into week 2 of the season it is interesting to note that these teams went 4-1 ATS in week 1.

Both of those basketball games were very interesting today, but in different ways – and only one was watchable.

First, the Butler game. I have a serious man-crush on Gordon Hayward. He had 19 points and nine boards, and was absolutely everywhere throughout that game. From start to finish he did everything for his team and is by far the biggest reason why this remarkable run continues. Most impressively, though, Hayward was able to play stifling, relentless defense all game while only drawing two fouls. I was convinced he was the best future pro heading into this Final Four. Now I am certain of it. As good as he was, though, what I’ll remember most about this game was the glaring absence of Kalin Lucas. Without their floor general Michigan State regularly looked confused and disorganized when they were moving the ball down the court, and they just weren’t effective enough when they needed to be. They did a good job of controlling the Bulldogs in the second half, but without Lucas they were unable to capitalize on it and grab the win that was there for the taking. This is a game that will haunt Izzo, Lucas, and everyone else for a long time.
