The Maryland Terrapins are right in the thick of the ACC Atlantic race. Along with NC State and Florida State, the Terrapins have only 1 loss in conference play and currently sit at 6-2 for the season. Every year in college football handicapping there seems to be at least one team that starts out with monstrous expectations but just can’t live up to them. In 2007 my beloved Michigan was a top five and a serious national championship contender heading into the season. And then Appalachian State happened. Just typing those words makes me ill. In 2008 Georgia started the year as the top team in the country, but were lucky to only lose three games given the way they played. Last year it was Ole Miss that was supposed to make it big as Jevan Snead won the Heisman. Snead was a disaster and the team lost four games. The obvious question, then, is which touted team is going to flame out this year? Here are three good candidates for handicappers to consider fading if things dont go there way:

With the first college football rankings poll released today what better time to look at some over valued college football teams. The sports media and college football fans spend the whole offseason building hype around a wide range of teams. Some of those teams thrive under the burning glare of the spotlight, while others inevitably wilt under the weight of expectations. It always seems easy in hindsight to look at the teams that don’t live up to their hype and pick out the reasons for their struggles. At this time of year, though, it’s much tougher to spot the ones who are headed to troubles. Here are five teams that are getting a lot of attention right now that could be headed for troubles as well as overvalued by the college football oddsmakers.

Before we get into the bowl previews, I just want to look at one issue with the Mike Leach situation. I’m not going to try to decode whether he did what he is alleged to do, whether it is as bad as it seems, or what punishment he should face. I justwant to ask one question – if you were going to harass one of your players, wouldn’t a smart person make sure that the player they were harassing wasn’t the son of an ESPN commentator who loves nothing more than the sound of his own voice? If Leach goes down then it will be incredibly hard to have any sympathy for him because of this shocking lack of judgement. Any self-respecting bully knows that you pick on kids who can’t defend themselves, not those who have a vocal advocate on their side.
