The top two teams in the AL West start an important four-game series in Arlington tonight with a superb pitching matchup.

Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers

Los Angeles comes into this series having a chance to gain ground on the AL West Division leaders, as they currently sit five games back of the Texas Rangers.  “We’ve been sitting four, five games back for a while now,” tonight’s starter Jered Weaver said.  “When you’re playing those games, you pick up a game or lose one.  Simple as that.”  The Angels are now 4-2 since the All-Star break after dropping the series finale against the New York Yankees on Wednesday afternoon and the team is 7-10 this month (-380), after losing just nine games in June (18-9).  The team trails 3-2 in the season series against Texas, as four of the five meetings this year have been one-run affairs.  Los Angeles has dropped eight of the last 11 meetings in Arlington.

Angels starter Jered Weaver has managed just two victories at home while ranking second in the majors in strikeouts.

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels

Texas has the second-best record in the majors and handicappers better start paying attention.  The Rangers enjoyed an outstanding June, posting the most wins and best record in the majors.  Part of this success must be attributed to the play of outfielder Josh Hamilton.  He came into Wednesday night’s contest hitting safely in a career-best 22 straight games and hitting .462 with nine home runs and 29 RBI over that span.  Those numbers have led to Hamilton batting an MLB-best .457 in June.  The Rangers have held their own against the Angels, posting wins in 13 of their last 22 games before the series started.  The Rangers are 13-6 against the AL West (+710), but have played just seven games on the road (4-3).

A pair of aces matchup against each other in the series finale.

Los Angeles Angels at Kansas City Royals

Los Angeles picked up its sixth win in eight games on Wednesday night, grabbing a 7-2 road victory over the Kansas City.  The Angels have now won 11 of their last 13 games against the Royals, including eight of the last 10 at Kauffman Stadium.  The team’s offense is currently searching for someone to replace 1B Kendry Morales, who is on the disabled list with a broken leg.  Manager Mike Scioscia may have found a temporary solution, giving C/DH Mike Napoli his second start at the position.  He enjoyed a successful month of May, hitting .322 with eight home runs and 17 RBIs.  “Mike’s value to our team is important at any time,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.  Los Angeles has compiled an 11-8 daytime mark this season (+360) and the team is 79-34 over the last three years (+4,610).

Aces are wild in this AL West showdown featuring two teams that are searching for some type of momentum.

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels

Seattle is enjoying a three-game win streak (+307) and has won five of its last seven games due to an offensive resurgence.  Over the last six games, the offense is batting .391 with runners in scoring position, which is a dramatic difference from batting .235 in the first 41 games of the season.  This production has led to the team going over the total in four straight games for the first time all season.  OF Ichiro Suzuki has never been the team’s problem during the month of May, coming in with the highest career batting average for a player with a minimum of 300 plate appearances (.363).  The Mariners are 8-16 this month (-1,000) and have a horrible 27-54 (-3,110) record over the last three years in May.

Well, it took precisely one day for all the questions I asked about the Suns yesterday to be answered. Amare Stoudemire is out for eight weeks with eye surgery after suffering a detached retina on Wednesday against the Clippers. That essentially eliminate any chance they had of being relevant down the stretch. It seems like Steve Kerr is cursed. He certainly can’t catch a break as GM. I know a lot of people are really down on Kerr, but I’m not one of them. He has certainly struggled to get this team going this year, but I put a lot more of that on Terry Porter than Kerr. Sure, Kerr made the decision to bring Porter in, but that decision turned out to be much worse than it looked at the time. Mike D’Antoni had to go, the team couldn’t lay much defense, and Porter was respected, so it made some sense. I also think that not trading Stoudemire was the right move, even if it really doesn’t look like it right now. Picking up Jason Richardson was also a good move, and Shaq was a solid gamble.
