Indianapolis Colts Vs Green Bay Packers Football
The Colts are 3.5 point underdogs to the home Packers
The Indianapolis Colts (0-2) and Green Bay Packers (1-1) both have something in common heading into their preseason meeting on Thursday.  Each team is led by a Pro Bowl quarterback and has struggled after he has left the game with the reserves failing to perform.  The Packers seem to have a bigger edge playing at home and are small favorites at -3.5 against the Colts on the current NFL football lines.

The Bills are currently a 3.5 point favorite in the NFL odds against the Colts tonight.
The Indianapolis Colts (0-1) and Buffalo Bills (0-1) meet for the first time since the 2009 regular-season finale, and if you watched that game then you will understand why the home team is favored yet again in this preseason matchup.  The Bills were -9 on the NFL point spread in the last meeting and dominated the Colts in a 30-7 rout as Indy backup QB Curtis Painter struggled mightily after Peyton Manning left the game.

49ers vs Colts Preseason Betting Preview
The 49ers are 3 point road favorites today, only the second team this week to be listed as a road fav by the NFL football betting oddsmakers.
The poor preseason record of the Indianapolis Colts over the last decade has made oddsmakers take notice and downgrade them significantly from how they would perform in the same situation during the regular season.  That is the easy explanation for why the Colts are home underdogs at +3 on the NFL betting odds against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

My 12-7 ATS record last year proves I cover for bettors just as often as my predecessor Mr Dungy did
The problem right now for most sports bettors is that the football season is so close that’s alluring, camps are underway, week 1 NFL lines are posted, but there is still a whole pile of time to kill between now and the first meaningful kickoff. Far too long. In  an attempt to kill some of that time while still being productive, I thought I’d take a look back at the teams that have been consistently good against the spread over the last five season, and those that have been consistently bad. The reasoning is that the five year time frame smooths out some of the flukes and unexplainable one year glitches – like the year Cleveland was actually good – and gives us a more meaningful long term picture. Before we look at what I found, I’m going to be like a bad comedian and tell the punchline before the joke – it’s really striking here that the teams that have been consistently solid against the spread are the teams that have been consistently very good, and the ones that have consistently burned money are the terrible teams. In this regard at least, the betting public is right in their NFL pick loyalties:

NFL Betting Season Win TotalsThis is a very interesting time when it comes to NFL win totals betting. They have been posted for a while now, so the initial action has bet out any obvious errors, but the public hasn’t yet paid a lot of attention to them. That likely means that the futures are somewhat more accurate now than they will be before the fans jump on the public teams. Because of that, looking at the odds right now shows us some very interesting trends and opinions. Based on the line movement and the prices available there are hints of some strong and interesting opinions held by those who have made bets so far. Here are 11 win totals that have seemed to have one-sided action so far. In each case the one-sided action can be a clue that the total is likely to change as the season nears, and it gives us something to think about when it comes to the teams (odds are form Bodog):

Austin signs tender with Cowboys

Pro Bowl wide receiver Miles Austin signed his $3.16 million tender with the Dallas Cowboys Friday. Austin had a breakout season in 2009, catching 81 passes for 1,320 yards. He scored 11 touchdowns for the Cowboys. He caught only 13 passes for 278 yards in 2008.

Some looking back, and some looking ahead:

1. Peyton Manning. There is no question – he lost that game with a pass he shouldn’t have made. That’s not the only reason that New Orleans won, of course, but it was the final straw, and he made the mistake when the team had a very legitimate chance of, at the very least, getting to overtime. I had a long debate with a guy at my Super Bowl party last night. It’s not that I really hate the guy. I don’t like because I haven’t since college, but I can respect what he does. What my issue is, though, is that he gets far more credit than he deserves – than any guy deserves. He’s a great regular season quarterback, but the fact is that he is just 9-9 in his career in the playoffs, and he has now made the Super Bowl twice and played well below his capabilities both times. I believe in giving lots of credit when it’s due, but I have a real issue with worshiping a guy just because he’s a good guy if the facts don’t back it up. The facts are this – if anyone other than him had his playoff record they would face serious criticism. All I’m saying is that he should, too.
