The 2009 NBA Western Conference Finals will feature the Los Angeles Lakers versus the Denver Nuggets. The Lakers finally beat the Houston Rockets in game seven of the semifinals by a score of 89-70 and won a spot in the Finals. To say the least, although the last game of the series was an easy victory, the series was hard fought. The Nuggets have been waiting around for days to see who they’ll face in their next best of seven series.

 The Denver Nuggets, the second seed in the West, easily beat the New Orleans Hornets four games to one in their opening series, while the Dallas Mavericks, the sixth seed, surprised the third seed San Antonio Spurs, winning their series four to one.  The result is the Denver Nuggets will take on the Dallas Mavericks in the second round. Both teams have had plenty of time to rest and prepare. Which team looks to have the advantage in this one?

The second best team in the Western Conference, the Denver Nuggets (54-28), will meet the seventh seed New Orleans Hornets (49-33) in the first round of the NBA playoffs. In the four-game season series the teams split with the Nuggets, taking the last meeting, which was played on March 25, 101-88. Denver went 8-2 in their last 10 games, and the Hornets were 4-6 over their final 10.

It is looking more and more like Oklahoma City made a monumentally bad decision. They were able to get Tyson Chandler from New Orleans for a steal, and he would have added some talent and stability to a team that is playing better than their record. But then the team doctors for the Thunder pulled an unexpected move and rejected the trade because of a case of turf toe and an ankle injury even though neither problem seemed serious. Allen Iverson is my favorite NBA player, and he has been wasting away in Denver (and Philly for a few years before that, for that matter), so I am very happy to see him get moved today. Despite my bias, I have to say that the trade of Iverson to Detroit for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess is a very good one for both teams – one with a chance for a real win-win scenario.
