The Dallas Cowboys (2-1) and Houston Texans (0-2) meet in the preseason for the sixth time in the last seven years and will later meet in the regular season for only the second time during that stretch.  The teams have never played each other twice in the same year, but the Texans will host the rematch again on September 26th after Dallas visits Houston as 3-point underdogs on pro football lines for Saturday.

Two teams who are among the favorites to meet in Dallas for Super Bowl XLV square off here when the Cowboys (1-1) visit the San Diego Chargers (1-0) on Saturday.  Both teams fell short of expectations last year when they each lost in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, but they have not lost focus with their sights set on a much bigger prize this season.

The Dallas Cowboys will be playing for the second time in five days and look to build off an impressive 19-7 win over Cincinnati in the Hall of Fame Game when they host the Oakland Raiders on Thursday.  The Cowboys are solid favorites at -3 at Bookmaker and 5Dimes at the time of publish. They played outstanding defense against the Bengals, who did not score until the final minute of the game.  Meanwhile, the Raiders hope they can begin to turn their fortunes around with a good preseason showing at Dallas.

Hall of Fame Game Bengals vs Cowboys
Oddsmakers currently have the Bengals as a 3 point favorite
Sunday’s NFL Hall of Fame Game pits the Cincinnati Bengals against the Dallas Cowboys, which would be an outstanding matchup for the regular season and still makes for an intriguing preseason battle.  If this were the regular season, the publicly popular Cowboys would definitely be favored by more than the opener of -1.  Instead, injuries and the fact that Dallas could be resting several key players as well as not caring about games in prior preseasons has seen the Hall of Fame Game NFL odds shift to Bengals -2.5 or -3 with the total set at 32.5.

Jared Allen Minnesota VikingsNFL teams are absolutely obsessed with the defensive line. Finding players who can consistently provide pass rushing pressure is very hard to do, but teams use a lot of draft picks and spend millions on free agents in an attempt to do so. A team that can pressure the quarterback gets all sorts of attention form the public and the media. One that can stuff the run is a bit more under the radar, but no less valued by team management. The best way for a defensive front to provide apply pressure is a topic of much debate and contention, and there are about as many advocates of 3-4 schemes as those that back a 4-3.

Five Thoughts about each of Sunday’s games:

Dallas (+2.5) at Minnesota

1. Is the Dallas defense for real? They have allowed just two touchdowns in the last 12 quarters, and have looked almost unbeatable, but that has come in two games against the obviously deeply flawed Eagles and a game at the terrible Redskins. This is a big step up in competition for them.

1. New England Patriots – The Patriots are heavily favored to win it all – probably too favored. Still, they have as good a chance as anyone. If Brady is healthy, and it seems reasonable to assume that he will be, then he’ll be hungry to make up for lost time. He has all the tools he needs to do that – a good line to protect him, a strong wide receiver corps, perhaps the best running back battalion he has had in his time in New England, and so on. Defensively, the team is more than sound as well. On paper they are clearly the best team in the league, and they have the track record for living up to their potential.
