The Blue Jays look to finish the month with the most home runs in baseball and pick up a fifth-straight victory on their current homestand.

Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays

Cleveland has lost six of seven games and the starting rotation has given up 16 runs over 10 innings during a current three-game skid.  The Indians’ offense managed to collect just five hits, while allowing a six-run fourth inning in a 8-1 loss to the Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre last night.  “I think the night belonged to Shaun Marcum,” said manager Manny Acta.  “He was fantastic.”  Today’s game will be the second of a seven-game road trip that has the club traveling to Toronto and Boston.  The Tribe is 19-34 in road games this year (-530) and the total is 24-26 O/U in those contests.  Cleveland is also 12-21 against the AL East division, while having a winning 20-18 mark against their own division.  The club has been very successful playing on Saturdays, notching a 10-7 record (+660).

You could say that Stephen Strasburg had the best major league debut of any pitcher in the history of the MLB. There were only two pitchers, J.R. Richards (in 1971) and Karl Spooner (in 1954), who recorded more strikeouts in their debut than Strasburg did Tuesday. Strasburg had 14, Richards and Spooner 15 each.

I want to look at tonight’s NBA Draft a bit, but first a couple of quick stories to touch on:

  • I love the Shaq trade for Cleveland. He’s obviously not the man he was, but he’ll fit well with LeBron, they gave nothing of significance up for him, and they aren’t tied to him long term. The guy knows how to win, and he’s hard to contend with inside. I could see him liking the idea of going out on top, and this is as good a spot as any outside of the Lakers or the Spurs (two places he really isn’t going) to do so.
  • I was very interested to see Lleyton Hewitt pull a big upset of the number five seed off today, and look pretty darned good doing it. He’s in a soft draw, and could easily get to the quarterfinals. He’s traditionally been good at Wimbledon, and he has rediscovered some lost form recently. He’s not going to win it, but I see him winning a few more games.

Justine Henin retired suddenly yesterday despite the fact that she was number one in the world rankings. A couple of things arise from that. First, it’s sad where we have gotten to as a society of sports watchers – an athletes leaves suddenly and I can’t help but wonder what she was about to be caught doing. That’s probably not the case here, but we can’t help but wonder. Second, there goes one of the easiest bets in tennis. She had won three straight French Opens. The tournament starts in a couple of weeks. She hasn’t been playing well lately, but she still would have been an automatic bet for a few rounds.
