The Carolina Panthers (0-2) will try to jumpstart their offense when they give rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen his first career start against the Cincinnati Bengals (1-1) on Sunday. The Panthers find themselves to be 3-point home underdogs on the NFL spreads following consecutive losses to Tampa Bay (20-7) and the New York Giants (31-18) to start the season.
The Carolina Panthers (0-1) will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-0) on Sunday in their home opener and hope starting quarterback Matt Moore will be ready to go after suffering a concussion last week in a 31-18 loss to the Giants. Moore is expected to start for the Panthers who are current -3 on the NFL point spread against a Buccaneers team that has lost 11 of the last 14 meetings with their NFC South rivals.
It’s just the first week of the National Football League season, but there were some games where key players left to concussions. Not only did it affect the outcomes of the opener, but it leaves a blurry picture on trying to handicap week 2 games. The most curious situation is in Philadelphia. Starter Kevin Kolb was knocked out with a concussion. Kolb’s stats were not impressive in the first half. He went 5 of 10 for 24 yards. Michael Vick came in and ignited the offense. He threw for 175 yards and a touchdown and ran for 103 yards. Eagles coach Andy Reid said after the game that Kolb is still the No. 1 quarterback and will return when healthy.
The New York Giants will have revenge on their minds when they welcome the Carolina Panthers to the new Meadowlands Stadium. The Panthers smoked the Giants, 41-9 in the final game in Giants Stadium behind Jonathan Stewart’s 206 yard rushing effort and Matt Moore’s 3 touchdowns.
The Carolina Panthers and New York Giants open the regular season and New Meadowlands Stadium on Sunday, each looking for fresh starts off disappointing years. The Panthers and Giants both missed the playoffs after identical 8-8 campaigns that were simply not good enough to get them to the postseason in competitive divisions.
The Carolina Panthers have had an awful preseason. In their first two games the Panthers have not been able to score an offensive touchdown. First-string, second-string, third-string, whatever-string – no offensive touchdowns in two games. Not good. The lone Panther touchdown came on a 31 yard fumble return by C.J. Wilson in week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens. Then John Kasay missed the PAT. It has been that kind of preseason for the Panthers.
The Baltimore Ravens have dreams of returning to the Super Bowl while the wounded Carolina Panthers simply want to get back on track after suffering some key injuries and making a few personnel changes heading into their preseason opener on Thursday night. The Ravens enter this game as home favorites at -3.5 after a successful 9-7 campaign a year ago that was capped by a surprising upset of the New England Patriots in the opening round of the playoffs.
