USC has a new coach and limited scholarship players, but the public will continue to back them making them overvalued
Every year in college football there are a couple of high profile, very popular teams that draw a whole lot of public action and then put the money in a big pile and burn it up. Last year Texas was a brutal team against the college football spreads – 5-7-1. The year before USC wasn’t a particularly good bet. In 2007, neither USC nor LSU performed for bettors like the top five teams that they were. The betting public assumes that a team that wins consistently and does it in impressive fashion is a good bet, so when they aren’t regularly covering spreads it can be costly. Here’s a look at five teams that have the potential to be high profile betting disappointments this year:

With a tough 4 game schedule ahead, a couple lossess could send this hurricane team into a major slide
Every year in college football handicapping there seems to be at least one team that starts out with monstrous expectations but just can’t live up to them. In 2007 my beloved Michigan was a top five and a serious national championship contender heading into the season. And then Appalachian State happened. Just typing those words makes me ill. In 2008 Georgia started the year as the top team in the country, but were lucky to only lose three games given the way they played. Last year it was Ole Miss that was supposed to make it big as Jevan Snead won the Heisman. Snead was a disaster and the team lost four games. The obvious question, then, is which touted team is going to flame out this year? Here are three good candidates for handicappers to consider fading if things dont go there way:

The Arkansas Razorbacks look like a good Over college football pick on the regular season win lines
Every year sports books offer wagers on college football team regular season wins. You can bet over or under a certain amount of games, and conference championships and/or bowl games do not count. They are a fun way to wager that give you action all season. Sometimes it backfires due to injuries, as was the case with Oklahoma last season. The Sooners were a top 5 team and projected to get 10 or 11 wins and compete for a National Title. Of course everyone remembers what happened in the first game last season. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Sam Bradford was injured against BYU. The Sooners lost that game and never recovered. They ended up with a disappointing 7-5 season before beating Stanford in the Sun Bowl. And by the same token, teams such as Iowa came out of nowhere and won 10 games last season. Here are 5 win totals I like. Odds are courtesy of Bodog, who offers a ton of college football betting options this season.

The Miami Hurricanes May Be Overvalued Coming Into the 2010 Football Season
With the first college football rankings poll released today what better time to look at some over valued college football teams. The sports media and college football fans spend the whole offseason building hype around a wide range of teams. Some of those teams thrive under the burning glare of the spotlight, while others inevitably wilt under the weight of expectations. It always seems easy in hindsight to look at the teams that don’t live up to their hype and pick out the reasons for their struggles. At this time of year, though, it’s much tougher to spot the ones who are headed to troubles. Here are five teams that are getting a lot of attention right now that could be headed for troubles as well as overvalued by the college football oddsmakers.

Big 12 Football
This will be the last year of the Texas Nebraska Rivalry
Colorado, Nebraska, Utah, and Boise State will all have one thing in common this year – they will be lame ducks in their current conferences as they prepare to move to new, presumably greener pastures for the 2011 season. The amount of conference shuffling wasn’t nearly as much as it had the potential to be, but it’s still far more than we are used to – especially in the major conferences. When 2011 rolls around the Pac-10, Big Ten, and Big 12 are all going to look significantly different next year than they will this year. The Big Ten and Pac-10 will have three new teams between them, and will be split into divisions for the first time. They’ll both likely have conference championship games to worry about for the first time. The Big 12 is moving in the opposite direction – the departure of two teams will likely mean the end of divisions, and will certainly mean the end of the conference championship game.

Amidst much talk about realignments, it is never too early to look at the futures for the next college football season. Pinnacle has the odds, and we will look at some teams to think about and some to stay away from.

College Football Weekly Recap

Michigan’s self-imposed penalties

The University of Michigan has admitted to violating NCAA rules and imposed penalties on itself. The school released a list of penalties including cutting back practice time by 130 hours over the next two years, cutting the number of assistants and banning them from practices and coaching meetings for the rest of 2010, and a two-year probation. The school also will issue letters of reprimand to head football coach Rich Rodriguez and six other staff members.

Fiesta Bowl
TCU (-7.5) vs. Boise State
8:00 pm ET

This is the bowl I have been looking forward to more than any other (though I still think it would have been better to have these teams play Cincinnati and Florida instead of each other again). I really haven’t got a good sense of how this one is going to turn out, but I am a bit surprised by the size of the spread. TCU played a significantly tougher schedule overall, but Boise State’s win over Oregon was the most impressive that either team had all year. That perceived slight could be good motivation for Boise State – not that they need it. It’s interesting to note that this is the first time that undefeated teams have played each other in a bowl game without a national championship on the line. Both teams have a lot to offer on both sides of the ball. TCU is brilliant defensively, and very good on offense as well. Boise State is explosive on offense, and showed against Oregon that they can smother on defense as well. Both teams are reasonably healthy, and they are both exceptionally well coached so they are going to be ready for his one. It was a brilliant game last year when the two teams met and TCU got a narrow win, and I expect even more from this one. The best individual matchup I will be keeping my eye on is Boise State QB Kellen Moore against TCU sack machine Jerry Hughes. Moore and the Broncos need to find a way to contain the TCU pass rush if they want to be able to come out on top.

Wow, was Michael Vick ever bad last night. 7 of 11 sounds good until you hear that it was only for 26 yards, and that he threw a pick. The ball was all over the place and he looked like, well, a guy who hasn’t played football in a couple of years. There’s another factor here, too – it’s going to take a while for Vick to get back to where he was, but remember that where he was wasn’t exactly at the top of the pile n terms of accuracy. The guy has never been much of a passer, so expecting miracles is probably a bit silly. My expectations for his week three return are very low – even if it is against the Chiefs so he will have all the time in the world to pass because that team is seemingly allergic to the pass rush.
