Two teams that started the second half of the season in opposite directions meet for a series in the Bay Area.

Boston Red Sox at Oakland Athletics

Boston has dropped nine of its last 12 games and have fallen 6.5 games back of the New York Yankees in the AL East race.  The Red Sox offense sputtered in the first series back from the All-Star break, scoring just 11 runs in four home games against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.  The lineup still leads the majors in runs despite the recent slump, which has been caused by having four regular contributors on the disabled list.  The Red Sox are 22-20 on the road this season and are in a stretch of playing 14 straight games against the AL West division, traveling to Seattle and Anaheim after this series.  Boston is 9-5 against Western opponents so far in 2010.

The Athletics are the best home underdog on Monday’s card in a series opening game against the Yankees.

New York Yankees at Oakland Athletics

New York heads West with the best record in baseball (50-31, +250) and winners of two of its last three games.  Tonight’s game is the first of a seven-game road trip, with the club currently 22-18 away from Yankee Stadium (-190).  The Bronx Bombers are a dominating 33-17 against right-handed starters in 2010 (+780), averaging 5.7 runs and combining to bat .284 as a team.  In those 50 games, New York is outscoring opponents by a run and a half (5.7 to 4.2).  The Yankees are 14-4 against the Athletics since the start of the 2008 season.  New York also brings an impressive 33-18 (.647) mark against them since 2004, marking the highest winning percentage over the stretch by any AL team.

Both the Chicago White Sox and Oakland Athletics are poised to complete a sweep of their opponent on Sunday.

Florida Marlins at Chicago White Sox

Florida managed to score just a single run on Saturday, ending a season long stretch of 23 scoreless innings.  In its last six road games, the Marlins have been held to three runs or fewer five times (5-0-1 O/U).  “We need to make an adjustment and start scoring runs again,” said 2B Dan Uggla.  A win today would keep the team’s May record above .500 (11-10, +40), which is still a remarkable improvement from a disastrous 9-20 record in the month last season.  Florida is 12-16 against right-handed starters this season (-600), but has garnered a 131-125 mark the last three seasons (+810).
