It’s been well-documented that the National League has failed to capture a victory in the Midsummer Classic since 1996, even though the last four contests have been decided by a single run. Ever since the game was changed to hand the victor home-field advantage in the World Series, the National League has failed to deliver as well. “The priority is to win the ballgame,” Philadelphia Phillies and National League manager Charlie Manuel said. “That’s why we are here.” All the talk about the Senior Circuit is centered on the pitching staff, with Florida starter Josh Johnson, Philadelphia ace Roy Halladay and San Francisco’s two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum set to come out of the pen.
We are in the midst of interleague play in baseball. For the next couple of weeks all but one game will involve a National League team playing one from the American League, with the rules of the home team being enforced. I absolutely hate interleague play. Baseball is a game of beautiful traditions, and one that should be completely and absolutely above shameful gimmicks like interleague plays. Seeing things like the two Chicago teams or the two New York squads play is mildly amusing, but it isn’t worth all of the disruption and meaningless matchups that the rest of interleague play creates for us. Those classic matchups become less and less compelling each time they are played as well – a subway series World Series wouldn’t be the novelty it was last time we saw it now that the teams play every year. If I had my way I would not only end interleague play immediately, but also purge the records of every one of the stupid games that has ever been played.
If you were lucky enough to play the Rays season win total over the number in Vegas before the season, it’s almost time to crack the bottle of champagne. Tampa Bay enters a mid-week series against the New York Yankees with an MLB-best record of 28-11 (+1,040). Just how good is this record you might ask? Simply put, only nine teams since 1969 have produced a better record at this point of the season.
