Butler is no stranger to wearing Cinderella’s slipper having advanced all the way to the national championship and coming within an eyelash of beating Duke in that game. Now the #8 seed Butler take on the #1 seed Pittsburgh Panthers with a trip to the Sweet 16 in New Orleans next week on the line. Pittsburgh is 28-5 overall and won the Big East regular season title with a 15-3 record. The Panthers went 4-3 in their last 7 games. They beat UNC-Asheville 74-51 in the second round of the tournament to advance to this game. Asheville actually pulled within 6 points with 15 minutes to go before Pitt pulled away for the 23 point win. Pitt guard Ashton Gibbs led all scorers with 26 points in the win against the Bulldogs. Butler has won 10 straight games, and finished in a three way tie for Horizon League title with Cleveland St and Milwaukee. Butler was 24-9 overall and 13-5 in conference. Butler beat Old Dominion 60-58 on a late tip-in from forward Matt Howard. Howard and guard Shelvin Mack both scored 15 points for the Bulldogs. The winner of this game will play the winner of Kansas St and Wisconsin in the regional semifinals.
