Kansas and West Virginia are both 2-2 on the season and both have lost their lone Big-12 matchups, but West Virginia enters this week as big 28-point favorites over the Kansas Jayhawks.
The West Virginia Mountaineers lost by 10 to Alabama on opening day, but followed that up by victories over Towson and Maryland. Last week, West Virginia fell to then No.4 Oklahoma 45-33. This week should bring better fortunes according NCAA Football oddsmakers.
The Mountaineers have one of the best passing attacks in the nation, ranking 3rd in passing yardage with 401.8 per game. It’s helped the team average 37.5 points per game while holding opponents to 28.8 per contest.
QB Chris Trickett has been deadly accurate with a 72 percent completion ratio and 1,600 yards on the season. He’s also thrown for 9.14 yards per completion while amassing nine TDs to just three INTs. His QB rating of 162.3 reflects the strength of both Trickett and his receiving corp.
Kevin White is Trickett’s number one target. He’s caught for 633 yards already and has an average reception of 15.1 yards. He’s also scored three TDs on the year, bested by only Mario Alford. Alford has 307 yards on the season and had a 43-yard TD catch. Outside of this tandem, the Mountaineers also have Wendall Smallwood (244 yards), Jordan Thompson (128) and Daikiel Shorts (121).
Kansas won its opening week game against Southeast Missouri State, but was badly defeated by Duke on Sept. 13, losing 41-3. It won the next week against Central Michigan, but was shutout by Texas 23-0 last week.
The Jayhawks are expected to be blown out in this affair, and it is likely due to the lack of pass production. The Jayhawks rank 110th in the nation in passing yardage with 165.5 yards per game. Accordingly, Kansas has only averaged 15.3 points per game, while surrendering over 25 to opponents.
