Merling misses 2010, Dolphins sign Douglas signs two-year contract
The Miami Dolphins have signed Defensive End Marques Douglas to a two-year $2.5M contract. The signing comes only a few days after the team learned that projected starting defensive lineman Phillip Merling suffered an Achilles’ tendon injury that will sideline him for the entire season.
Douglas played for the Jets in 2009 and finished with 64 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Merling is facing a felony charge for aggravated battery after his pregnant girlfriend claimed in May that he hit her in the face five times.
The 25-year old was a second-round draft pick for the Dolphins in 2008. He made 33 tackles and totaled 2.5 sacks in 2009.
Mangold won’t miss camp
New York Jets center Nick Mangold said he won’t hold out from training camp even if he doesn’t get the new contract he is looking for. He is entering the final year of his five-year $7.5M rookie contract and is trying to get a bigger deal.
Mangold hasn’t missed a single game since joining the Jets as a first-round pick in 2006. He has made the Pro Bowl in the past two years.
LB Bulluck signs with Giants
Veteran linebacker Keith Bulluck has signed a one-year $2.5M contract with the New York Giants. He recently recovered from an ACL tear and is looking to bounce back from the injury on a new team.
Bulluck spent 10 years with the Tennessee Titans, but is looking forward to playing in New York, where he grew up. He played in 157 games with the Titans and recorded 18 sack and 19 interceptions. He started all 14 games he appeared in last season and recorded 108 tackles and three picks.
Colt McCoy signs four-year deal
Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy has signed a four-year contract with the Cleveland Browns. The deal is worth a maximum of $5M. The Browns also have Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace on their roster, and McCoy will most likely be a backup to start out.
McCoy threw for over 13,000 yards as the signal-caller for the Texas Longhorns and tossed 112 touchdown passes.
Bryant signs deal with Cowboys
While most players are still waiting for first overall pick Sam Bradford to sign his contract to be able to better gauge the money they should be making, first round pick Dez Bryant has signed a five year deal with the Dallas Cowboys.
Dallas picked the wide receiver at 24. Bryant’s contract is worth a total of $11.8M with $8.3M in guaranteed money. The deal allowed the wideou to be with the team when training camp started Friday, and leaves San Francisco 49ers fans wondering why Bryant’s buddy Michael Crabtree didn’t go about business like this last year.
Dumervil, Broncos agree to big extension
The Denver Broncos rewarded their best pass rusher for being patient, signing his restricted-free agent tender and working out with the team instead of holding out for a bigger contract. The team has signed Elvis Dumervil to a $61.5M extension that runs through 2015.
The extension includes $43.2M in guaranteed money. Dumervil had a team-record 17 sacks last year and followed his performance on the field up with a record-breaking contract for his position.
NFL suspends CB Williams for two games
The NFL has suspended Baltimore Ravens cornerback Cary Williams for two games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The violation occurred when Williams was playing with the Tennesse Titans. Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said that the team was aware of the situation when they signed Williams.
Reed could miss considerable time due to hip rehab
Ravens safety Ed Reed has acknowledged that he will miss the start of the regular season while recovering form hip surgery. He has dismissed reports that he could miss as many as six weeks, but has said that he will miss some time.
