The Cincinnati Bengals are off to a red hot 3-0 start, and hosting the Kansas City Chiefs should ideally be a game in which it can prevail. The 1-2 Chiefs find itself struggling at the bottom of the AFC West, but NFL oddsmakers have looked favorably upon it, setting the line just 4-points in favor of the undefeated Bengals.

The Bengals are indeed on the top of their game, and WR Marvin Jones said “The way we’re clicking right now, it would be naive not to think that this is a really great opportunity for us to escalate in our division and within the AFC.” Indeed, Cincy fans have now turned their sites to a higher goal than what could have been anticipated, that of a division crown and a leap in the AFC that few expected.

The Bengals are tied with the Patriots and Broncos atop the AFC and that 3-0 start gives it a 75 percent chance to reach the postseason (dating back to ’90). The Bengals have not won its first four since the ’05 season, but if it prevails as NFL oddsmakers expects it will be off to that start and only building further steam to what could be a breakthrough season for the club.

Instrumental in the Bengals success has been Andy Dalton who is having his best career season. Now in his fifth year, he has thrown for 866 yards through three games and racked up a passer rating of 121.0. Dalton threw for 383 yards and a trio of TDs last week in a 28-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, and A.J. Green caught two of those end zone jaunts.

Green should pose significant problems to the Chiefs’ secondary and CB Sean Smith more than has his work cut out for him, especially returning from a suspension for violation of the substance abuse policy. Losing Philip Gaines will prove to be an issue for KC as well, and he is out for the remainder of this year.

KC is in a world of trouble after giving up 861 passing yards and 10 TDs thus far, five of which came last week to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in a 38-28 win. The Chiefs do not believe this season is a lost cause, however, and Derrick Johnson simply said, “We have a good team.”

How good? Good enough to rally and compete in the division, good enough to beat the red hot Cincinnati Bengals? I

t is doubtful, but a four point spread is hardly an insurmountable disadvantage and this could be the week the Chiefs get back on pace. It did end a streak of 18 games without a WR catching a TD, so perhaps the tides are turning. Even so, its offense has struggled in the worst way and it has converted just 16.7 percent of third downs. Fully expect the Bengals to prevail in this, and covering the spread is an attractive bet given the strength of its offense this season.
