The Green Bay Packers (1-0) will try to move on after losing running back Ryan Grant for the season with an ankle injury when they host the Buffalo Bills (0-1) on Sunday. The Packers are the biggest favorites of the week at -13 on the NFL odds following a 27-20 victory at Philadelphia last Sunday while the Bills will be looking for more offense after they lost 15-10 at home to Miami.
Ironically, Buffalo has three healthy running backs on its roster, including rookie C.J. Spiller, Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Lynch has been linked to Green Bay as a potential trade candidate to replace Grant because he played with Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers at Cal. However, Brandon Jackson will take Grant’s place in the starting lineup for now after rushing for 63 yards on 18 carries against the Eagles.
Rodgers also will be counted on to have an improved performance as even he admitted he played “as bad as I can play” vs. Philly. He had thrown for 200 yards or more in 20 of 23 games before being limited to 188 by the Eagles, who picked him off twice as well. Green Bay’s defense turned in an outstanding effort in the first half to help bail Rodgers and the offense out, holding Philadelphia to just three points and knocking quarterback Kevin Kolb out of the game. Michael Vick gave the Packers some problems in the second half, but a 27-10 deficit going into the fourth quarter was simply too much for him and the Eagles to overcome.
The Bills had a very difficult time offensively against the Dolphins last week and could struggle again here at Green Bay. Miami limited Buffalo to just 166 yards in the season opener, which was the lowest total of any team in Week 1. The rushing trio of Spiller, Lynch and Jackson combined for 38 yards between them and quarterback Trent Edwards threw for only 139 yards on 18-of-24 passing and one touchdown under new offensive-minded head coach Chan Gailey.
Surprisingly, the Bills have performed much better on the road recently, going 8-3 against the spread due to mostly high numbers. Even though their four preseason games all went OVER the total, the UNDER has been the play during their regular-season matchups with a 5-1 mark in their last six.
The Packers have been even better against the number dating back to last year, going 8-0-1 ATS in their last nine regular-season games. The OVER is 8-3 in Green Bay’s last 11 games in September. The Bills have covered the last three of the last four regular-season meetings with the Packers, but they have only played each other once since 2002.
