The 2-1 Seattle Seahawks are coming off their bye as they travel to take on the 1-3 Washington Redskins Monday night. The Redskins just wish they were on a bye as they were crushed by the rival New York Giants in last week’s Thursday night game.
The Seahawks and Redskins are meeting for the first time since a memorable 2013 wild card game in Landover when the Seahawks won 24-14. Redskins’ fans remember that game because then Washington coach Mike Shanahan kept an obviously injured Robert Griffin III in the game and the quarterback ended up tearing his ACL. He hasn’t been the same since. Since 2001, Washington leads the series against Seattle 6-3, but all three Seahawks’ wins came in playoff games, including in 2006 and 2008.
Seattle is coached by Pete Carroll. The Seahawks have home wins over the Green Bay packers 36-16 and two weeks ago against the Denver Broncos 26-20 in overtime. Seattle also beat Denver is last season’s Super Bowl. Seattle lost 30-21 at the San Diego Chargers. The Seahawks are 2-1 ATS and the total is 2-1. Seattle was a 4 point favorite against the Broncos and the total was 48.
Washington is coached by Jay Gruden. The Redskins have a home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-10. Washington lost at the Houston Texans 17-6 and the Philadelphia Eagles 37-34. Last week, Washington was destroyed by the Giants at home 45-14. Washington is 2-2 ATS and the total is 3-1 this season. The Redskins were 3 point favorites against New York and the total was 44.5.
Seattle is outscoring teams 28-22. The Seahawks are #5 in scoring. Seattle is averaging 357 yards per game on offense including 209 passing and 148 rushing yards per game. The Seahawks are #2 in rushing in the NFL. Seattle is allowing 321 yards per game on defense including 249 passing and 72 rushing yards per game. The Seahawks are #6 in total defense and #2 against the run. Seattle is 15/38 on third and fourth down conversions and opponents are 22/46. The Seahawks have forced 5 sacks and allowed 6 this season. Seattle is even in turnovers this season.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson has completed 69% his passes for 651 yards with six touchdowns and an interception. He also has 18 carries for 87 rushing yards. Running back Marshawn Lynch has 52 carries for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns, plus 8 catches for 81 yards and 2 touchdowns. Receiver Percy Harvin has 15 catches for 106 yards, along with 6 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown. Doug Baldwin has 10 catches for 105 yards. Ricardo Lockette has two touchdown catches. Tight end Zach Miller is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. Seven defensive players are listed as questionable or out.
Washington is being outscored 27-24 this season. The Redskins are #26 in points allowed. Washington is averaging 415 total yards per game including 292 passing yards and 123 rushing yards. The Redskins are #5 or better in total offense and passing. Washington is 19/53 on third and fourth down conversions, and opponents are 25/55. The Redskins have 11 sacks and have allowed 8 this season. Washington is -5 in turnovers. The Redskins have allowed a defensive and a special teams touchdown.
Kirk Cousins took over at quarterback against Jacksonville for an injured Robert Griffin III, who is likely out for the season with a dislocated ankle. Cousins has completed 62.3% of his passes for 934 yards with 6 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Running back Alfred Morris has 71 carries for 316 yards and 3 touchdowns. Roy Helu has 15 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown, plus 10 catches for 159 yards. Tight end Niles Paul has 21 catches for 313 yards and a touchdown. He is questionable with a concussion. Tight end Jordan Reed could come back from a hamstring injury suffered in week one but is questionable as well. Pierre Garcon has 24 catches for 255 yards and a touchdown. DeSean Jackson has 15 catches for 207 yards and a touchdown. Darrell Young has only 5 catches but two touchdowns. Eleven defensive players are listed on the injury report for Washington.
Seattle is 4-0 ATS after gaining more than 350 total yards, 10-0-1 after passing for more than 250 yards, 6-1-1 in Monday games, 6-1 on grass and after allowing more than 250 passing yards, 4-1 against teams with losing records and in road games, 21-7 against NFC teams, 19-8 after a straight up win, 37-16-1 overall, 13-6 after a cover, and 17-35-1 in October. The favorite is 4-1-1 ATS in this series recently. The Seahawks are 3-1-1 ATS in the last 5 games against the Redskins.
Washington is 4-1 ATS in Week Five, 3-1-1 after a double digit home loss, 10-21-6 after scoring less than 15 points, 3-7 in October, 3-8 after a straight up loss of more than 14 points, 4-11 against NFC teams, 2-6 in Monday games, and 2-7-1 after allowing more than 150 rushing yards. The over is 4-1 in Washington in the last 5 games in this series.
Washington struggled to say the least against the Giants, but looked pretty good the week before in a 3 point loss to the Eagles. The Seahawks aren’t quite as good as they were last year when they won the Super Bowl, but are still one of the league’s better teams. I like the Seahawks to win comfortably on the road in a high scoring game.
