The first week of NFL action brought about some interesting storylines. Are the Colts no longer the dominant team in the AFC East? Houston played exceptionally well, and Tennessee and Jacksonville had nice wins. Will Michael Vick be the starter in Philadelphia? Kevin Kolb was terribly ineffective. Are the Patriots and Giants back to old form? Both teams scored big home wins. And what about the Cowboys’ showing in Washington? Heads are gonna roll in the Big D.
The week 2 lines are out. Make sure to check our NFL betting lines page or see the table below to compare odds from various sportsbooks. Below are a few match-ups worth paying attention to.
Tennessee (-5 ½) vs. Pittsburgh – The Titans opened as 4 ½ point favorites but the line has come up to 5 ½ at most sites. Tennessee rolled over Oakland, 38-13 behind Chris Johnson’s 142 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns. Vince Young is back in control of his team. The Titans are 9-2 since Young took over again last season. Pittsburgh managed to pull out an overtime win against Atlanta. Dennis Dixon was good enough and the Steelers were able to run the ball. But the real story was the Pittsburgh defense, which kept the visiting Falcons out of the endzone for the entire game.
Minnesota (-5 ½) vs. Miami – The Vikes opened as 6 point home favorites but the line has receded to 5 ½ points with most books. Minnesota is coming off a Thursday night loss at New Orleans, 14-9. Brett Favre looked a little rusty and seemed to miss Sidney Rice. Visanthe Shiancoe had a nice game and will likely be Favre’s primary target. Adrian Peterson is the League’s most powerful running back. Miami’s defense played well at Buffalo, but I’m not sure that’s saying much. Chad Henne played well and so did Ronnie Brown.
Denver (-3 ½) vs. Seattle – The Broncos opened as 3 point home favorites but the line has moved up to 3 ½. Denver played decent at Jacksonville, though they lost 24-17. Kyle Orton and Knowshon Moreno are both underrated. The Denver D usually plays much better at home. Seattle had a huge victory over San Francisco, 31-6. The Niners came into the game as the consensus pick to win the NFC West, but Seattle gave Pete Carroll an unexpected blowout. Matt Hasselbeck was efficient, but how about the Seahawk defense? The Niners and Frank Gore managed only 49 yards rushing, 2.6 yards per carry.
Indianapolis (-5 ½) vs. New York Giants – The Colts opened as 5 ½ point favorites and the line has remained steady. Indy’s rush defense was pathetic in their 34-24 loss in Houston. Arian Foster piled up 231 rushing yards with 7 yards per carry. Peyton Manning threw the ball 57 times, completed 40 passes for 433 yards, 3 tds, and 0 ints. But the Colts mixed in only 10 rushes. The Giants won their first game in the new Meadowlands Stadium, 31-18. The Giants’ defense stood tall against the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers managed to gain only 237 total yards. The Giants collected 5 turnovers, but committed 4 themselves. Hakeem Nicks caught 3 touchdown passes in the win.
New Orleans (-5 ½) at San Francisco – New Orleans opened as a 4 ½ point road favorite and the line has gone up a point. The Saints travel all the way to San Francisco to take on a reeling Niners team. New Orleans was good enough against the Vikings last Thursday, winning 14-9. The Saints D outplayed the Vikings’ offense, holding Favre, Peterson, and company to only 253 total yards. Although they weren’t burned by it, Garrett Hartley can’t afford to miss easy kicks as the season wears on. The Niners look to rebound from a humiliating loss at Seattle, 31-6. After going undefeated in the preseason, and with Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, and a Mike Singletary defense, San Fran was expected to be pretty good this year. The schedule gets tougher with New Orleans, but the Niners can lick their wounds at home, which should help.
