Although both the 6-8 Oakland Raiders and 4-10 San Diego Chargers are both eliminated from the playoffs, this rivalry always means something. It will take on added emotion as it could be the last ever home game in Oakland for the Raiders on Christmas Eve. Both of these teams, along with the St. Louis Rams are among the teams the NFL is considering for relocation to Los Angeles. The Chargers and Rams both had their home finales last week. As many as two of the three teams could be relocated. All three franchises played in Los Angeles at one time.
Oakland leads the series against San Diego 60-50-2. The teams were original members of the AFL in 1960 and have been playing annually since then. The Raiders won 37-29 in San Diego October 25 to snap a three game losing streak to the Chargers. At one point in that game Oakland led 30-3 and the Raiders led 37-6 going into the fourth. The Chargers scored three fourth quarter touchdowns to make it seem way closer than it was.
San Diego is coached by Mike McCoy. The Chargers have home wins over the Detroit Lions 33-28, Cleveland Browns, 30-27, and Miami Dolphins 30-14 last week, plus a home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-25. San Diego was a one point favorite at home over equally terrible Miami last week and the total was 46.5. The Chargers jumped out to a 23-0 lead at halftime. Miami finally got on the scoreboard at 23-7 in the third quarter. The teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final 30-14 Chargers. Running back Danny Woodhead scored four touchdowns in the win for the Chargers. Miami had only 231 total yards. San Diego is 6-8 ATS and the total is 5-9 this season.
Oakland is coached by Jack Del Rio. The Raiders have home wins over the Ravens 37-33 and New York Jets 34-20, plus road wins at the Browns 27-20, Chargers, Tennessee Titans 24-21 and Broncos 15-12.
