The Saints and Vikings played a tight game Thursday night, going well below the total. The Saints ended up pushing the spread of 5 points at most sites, thanks to Garrett Hartley missing both field goal attempts. What’s in store for the rest of week 1? The Sunday slate offers several intriguing match-ups. The New England Patriots host the Cincinnati Bengals in what should be a great game. The Pats opened as 6 point favorites, but sportsbooks have brought that down to 4 ½ points at most sites. The Patriots are happy to have Wes Welker back, and Randy Moss is a great receiver. The Bengals counter with two terrific ball catchers of their own in Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco. The Pats can’t afford to forget about Cedric Benson coming out of the backfield. The Bengals defense is superior to the Patriots’. The public is siding with New England at about 2:1.
The Colts head to Houston to take on the Texans. The Colts opened as 3 point favorites, but now books are scattered between 1 and 2 points despite the Colts getting murdered by the public at over 95%. Like every year, Indy hangs its hopes on the arm of Peyton Manning, the League’s reigning MVP. The Colts can throw and catch, but will they be able to run the ball effectively? The Texans have their own slinger, Matt Schaub, who’s coming into his own. It must be nice to have Andre Johnson going after passes. Mario Williams and the Houston defense need to get Peyton Manning out of the pocket.
The Philadelphia Eagles welcome the Green Bay Packers to the City of Brotherly Love. This line has seen a lot of change. The game started as a pick, but not the Packers are list as 3 point road favorites. The public is almost unanimously in favor of the Pack, playing them at 97%! Aaron Rodgers is a good reason to back the Pack. Rodgers has to be a frontrunner to unseat Peyton Manning for the League’s MVP trophy. Kevin Kolb is another good reason to back the Pack. Kolb needs to be better than he was in the preseason because there’s a guy named Michael Vick just itching for another crack at being a starter.
The Cowboys travel to Washington to take on the Redskins in the Sunday night game. Dallas opened as 3 point road favorites and currently sit at 3 ½ points most places. The public is playing the ‘Boys at nearly 4:1. Tony Romo has another weapon to stretch the field in Dez Bryant. Jason Witten might have a big night … and a big year. It looks like Donovan McNabb will be ready to go. It’ll seem like old times with McNabb lining up against the Cowboys. Old times for Mike Shanahan and Wade Phillips, too. The two head coaches spent time together on the Broncos coaching staff around 20 years ago.
Monday night features two games, but the marquee match-up is between the Baltimore Ravens and the New York Jets. This might end up looking like a baseball score with two of the League’s best defenses. The Jets opened as 3 point home favorites but now the line is anywhere between 1 ½ and 2 ½ points, depending upon the book. The public is hitting the Ravens at 75%. Joe Flacco has another great receiver to throw the ball to; the Ravens added T.J. Houshmandzadeh this week. Can the Jets live up to their publicity? Can the Jets live up to their own talking? Shonn Greene looks to be a promising back. Mark Sanchez looks to avoid a sophomore slump. The Ravens are a tough draw for week 1.
