Georgia Tech is 3-1 after starting the season 3-0. It lost in Week 4 to No. 5 Clemson, falling 26-7 before its week 5 showdown with No. 14 overall ranked Miami. The Yellow Jackets have been tough, but the Hurricanes are 8-point favorites according to college football oddsmakers. The over/under is set at 54 for the game which will air on ESPN2 at Noon Eastern Time.
Deshaun Watson went absolutely nets against the Yellow Jackets’ defense. The Clemson Heisman candidate threw for 304 yards and rushed for 36, as the Tigers amassed 442 total yards. Lawrence Austin was not much to blame with 12 tackles (seven solo), but the Yellow Jackets had just one sack and five tackles for loss. Lance Austin did come up with an interception, but it was not enough as GT was unable to generate a lot of offense against a tough Clemson ‘D.’
Tech QB Justin Thomas threw just 4 of 13 for 29 passing yards and the Yellow Jackets managed just 95 on the ground, unable to get much of anything going. Dedrick Mills did fair with 75 yards, but it took him 16 carries and GT averaged just 2.5 yards per attempt on its 38 carries. Punter Ryan Rodwell was active but mediocre, with eight punts for an average of 39 yards each, with a long of just 44-yards. It was a busy day for Rodwell, and this week should afford Georgia Tech more opportunities to avoid those three-and-outs that were the norm last week.
Thomas is now in his senior season after throwing for 1,345 yards last year. His completion percentage was just 41.7 percent in 2015, and it is not world’s better this year (45.1 percent). He threw 13 TDs and eight interceptions a year ago and has just one TD pass this season. He’s been sacked four times and has a passer rating of 111.5 and a raw QBR of 56.4.
Thomas has had some success rushing the football, at least in Weeks 2 and 3 against Mercer and Vanderbilt when he ran for 69 and 84 yards respectively. Clemson was a less successful stint with 10 carries for a total of -25 yards. Thomas will need to get back to his rushing ways and be a little more accurate, or Miami will run away with this, though just 8-point favorites in the affair.
