New Mexico will look to snap a four-game losing streak in this series that includes a 75-70 defeat as 11-point home favorites on Jan. 18. The Lobos will have a hard time turning the tide due to dropping eight of the last 10 meetings in Southern California. The program is coming off an impressive defensive performance, allowing just 38 points versus the Wyoming Cowboys, which served as its fifth consecutive victory. New Mexico is 6-1 ATS on the road this season and the “over” is 4-3 in those contests.
The Lobos enter a pivotal stretch in Mountain West Conference action in facing two of their biggest rivals this week. New Mexico lost to both schools in the first half of the conference schedule and knows it can exact revenge in a big way. “We had a really bad second half against San Diego State the first time around,” stated Lobos head coach Steve Alford. Senior guard Phillip McDonald scored a season-high 20 points off the bench in the first meeting.
San Diego State has won three straight games versus New Mexico inside the Viejas Arena, as it looks to sweep the season series for the second straight season and eighth time overall. The Aztecs will be looking to bounce back from a 65-63 loss to the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels as 10-point road underdogs. The program has won its last 11 games following a loss, last suffering back-to-back defeats in January 2010. San Diego State is 10-5 ATS when playing a team with a winning record.
The Aztecs are led offensively by the play of junior Chase Tapley, who is leading all conference players in averaging 16.2 points per game. San Diego State is certainly known for its defensive intensity, going 41 consecutive games without allowing an opponent to shoot 50 percent or better from the field. It’s also important to note that the team has won 60 of 61 games against unranked competition. The Aztecs have also tallied an impressive 40-1 mark when ranked and taking on unranked competition.
Bettors will likely back the Aztecs due to their 5-2 ATS mark in home games, while the Lobos are 1-6 ATS as an underdog of 6.5 points or less.
