San Francisco faces a daunting task in taking on a top 10 opponent and the fact the program enters tonight’s matchup 0-5 away from home this season, while dropping the last two such contests by a combined 54 points. The Dons will be playing in the second annual Jerry Tarkanian Holiday Hoops Classic, as the team also participated in the inaugural event. San Francisco went 0-2 in last season’s event, falling to South Florida (69-49) and suffering a heartbreaking loss to Southern Illinois (67-66). Many people may notice that the program holds a 2-1 series advantage over San Diego State, but the last meeting came in 1979. San Francisco is 1-4 ATS on neutral courts the last three years and currently a double-digit underdog on the college basketball lines page.
The Dons are led offensively by the sophomore guard Michael Williams, who leads the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game on 48.9 percent shooting from 3-point range. He is a Southern California Native and he posted a game-high 19 points at Washington on Saturday. San Francisco is one of the youngest teams in Division I basketball this season with just seven years of returning Division I experience. The team is averaging 66.0 points and 39.2 rebounds per game after 10 contests. The program is 26-23 against current members of the Mountain West Conference.
San Diego State takes its season-opening 12-game winning streak to Sin City for the two-day event and will be taking on its fourth West Coast Conference foe of the season. The Aztecs made the move into the top 10 national ranking after a convincing 90-64 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. The team led built a 57-29 lead at halftime and made 12 3-pointers overall in the contest. “It feels good to come out in the first half and just play our hardest,” said forward Billy White. “Usually the first half is always lazy for us.” Six Aztecs scored in double figures in the contest. San Diego State is a dominating 35-18 ATS as a favorite over the past three years.
The Aztecs come in riding a five-game winning streak against West Coast Conference members, already beating Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and San Diego. Of San Diego State’s 12 wins this season, nine have been by 14 or more points. It’s also important to note that the squad has won six straight games on neutral/road floors. A win tonight would extend head coach Steve Fisher’s longest winning streak to open a season of his storied career. The team has also won 15 straight games versus non-conference opposition, which is the best mark in school history.
Bettors will be interested in knowing that the Dons are 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall, while the Aztecs are 12-3-2 ATS versus the West Coast Conference.
