The Cavaliers are coming off a 118-114 win over the Utah Jazz and have won seven straight since losing its opener to the Chicago Bulls. The Cavs were able to come from behind and outscore Utah 38-34 in the final period.
LeBron James tied his season high with 31 points and had 17 in the fourth quarter. The Cavs trailed 95-86, but James led a charge that saw him finish an impressive three point play over Rodney Hood before the Cavs scored the final 10 points of the game.
“I felt like the team needed it,” James said in reference to his fourth quarter effort. “They pushed us to the brink. Trying to make a push, see if we could change the momentum.
The Knicks know something about momentum. In the 95-93 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, it appeared to seal victory on a Kristaps Porzingis three-pointer, but the shot was ruled too late to count and the Hornets hung on to the win. Tyler Zeller scored on a layup on an inbounds play to put the Hornets ahead for the win. Porzingis totaled 10 points and 15 rebounds, and Carmelo Anthony chipped in 29 points, but it was not enough for coach Derek Fisher’s club.
On the season, Anthony is averaging 22.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. The rookie Porzingis is tallying 11.6 points and nine rebounds per game, as one of the biggest rookie impacters this season. Langston Galloway has also continued his strong play in his second NBA season, averaging 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and two assists while shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 60 percent from three (making two a game).
The loss to the Hornets snapped a two-game win streak for the Knicks who were coming off ‘Ws’ against both Toronto and the L.A. Lakers. The Knicks will have to counter one of the toughest frontcourts in basketball with Kevin Love sure to test Porzingis’ defensive skills plenty.
Love is averaging 17.6 points and 12 rebounds per game, while posting a PER of 20.2. It is still a far cry from his numbers in Minnesota, but he has looked better this season. While Love is shooting just 40 percent from the floor, he is involved, taking 15 shots per game. His three-point shooting has been off too, at 31.6 percent, but he is knocking down 2.3 per game.
James leads the charge with 25.3 points, 6.6 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. Even with Kyrie Irving sitting in street clothes, the Cavs have had more than enough firepower. That is partly due to Mo Williams still being a productive guard. He is averaging 16.5 points and 49 percent shooting while averaging 31.8 minutes per game.
Even Richard Jefferson is producing. The 35 year old swingman is averaging 9.3 points per game on 49 percent shooting. The Cavs simply reloaded and gave James a deeper, better supporting cast. With James and the crew favored by 6.5, the Cavs should have no problem winning this game.
