The Chicago Bulls are either beginning to build steam and momentum or are simply taking advantage of a dip in the schedule. As winners of three straight over the Clippers, Pelicans and 76ers, Chicago will host the Memphis Grizzlies as 4-point favorites tonight on ESPN at 7 PM CT.

The Bulls were able to outscore the 76ers by a count of 34-12 in the third quarter on Monday night, and Chicago got 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting from 2-guard Jimmy Butler. Butler has been Chicago’s best and most consistent contributor this season. The 6’7” swingman from Marquette is averaging 20.7 points per game on 44.4 percent shooting and he has averaged 17.3 points over the Bulls three-game streak. He hist just 8 of 30 from the field in the two wins over the Pelicans and Clippers, though.
The Bulls have had several players having down seasons, not the least of which are Pau Gasol and Derrick Rose. Gasol is averaging 15.3 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while Rose is posting just 12.9 points in 32 minutes a night. Even second-year forward Nikola Mirotic is in a bit of a sophomore slump, averaging just 11.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per night.

The Bulls do seem to miss HC Tom Thibodeau as the team just is not performing at the same level under a much more lax Fred Holberg. The Bulls’ entire rotation is weaker and it seems this may be the year that the Bulls shake things up some. Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson each are seeing just over 20 minutes a game and could start on a number of NBA franchises.
The Grizzlies are 14-12 on the season and have lost two of its past three with ‘Ls’ to the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets and a win last game over the Washington Wizards. Marc Gasol is having a down season, but as are all of his teammates. Gasol is good for 16.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game this season and point guard Mike Conley leads the way with 6.3 assists per game to go with his 1.19 steals.
The Grizzlies seem to be finally winding down as a team given that it sits just two games above .500 this year with no real prospect of proving a legitimate contending threat anymore. The team has a good deep rotation, but there is no real top end talent and the model seems to have elapsed itself.
