The Portland Trail Blazers will pick first in the 2007 draft and the Seattle Supersonics will get the second choice. The Atlanta Hawks got pick number three.
The Memphis Grizzlies and Boston Celtics, the teams with the two worst records in the league, will pick fourth and fifth.
What does it all mean?
First, it means that Portland, which landed this season’s Rookie of the Year Brandon Roy (16.8 PPG, 4 APG, .377—3-PT%), have a chance to sign this next season’s best rookie also.
They will either take Kevin Durant or Greg Oden. Both college stars are expected to be high impact players immediately upon hitting the professional court. Both Durant and Oden should be playing in the Western Conference next season.
Look for Oden to go first. Why? He’s a 7-foot center. How many of those are there? Oden, who lead Ohio State for the national championship game against Florida State, averaged 15.7 PPG, 9.6 RPG and 3.3 APG.
Durant, who played one season for the Texas Longhorns and won the player of the year award, put in 25.8 PPG and snagged 11.1 RPG. He was also the AP’s national player of the year.
The big losers are Memphis and Boston. The teams may still find some talent but nothing that will match-up with either Oden or Durant.
