1. Norv Turner should be fired now. With cause – willful and incomprehensible waste of talent.

2. The first thing the new coach should do is work on covering kick returns. It’s not even like Eddie Royal was an elite kick returner before today.

3. I am totally and utterly convinced by Kyle Orton. He’s no future MVP or anything, but he’s incredibly calm under pressure, and he avoids mistakes so well. He also assesses the options he has impressively quickly and effectively. The guy is a classic example of the difference a coach can make to a player.

4. So, the wins over the Cowboys, Pats, and now the Chargers over the last three weeks have shown that this team is for real. So where can they end up? Let’s look at the schedule. They are 6-0 now. They have Washington, the Raiders, and the Chiefs twice. That should get them to 10 wins barring any unforeseen problems – quite possibly enough to win the AFC West. After their current bye week they face a floundering Baltimore team. Pittsburgh, San Diego and the Giants are all tough opponents, but they get them all at home. They’ll win at least one of those. That leaves trips to Indianapolis and Philadelphia. Both will be tough, but they could win one as well. Reasonably, then, we can expect this team to wind up with somewhere between 11 and 13 wins – maybe more. In other words, there is a fairly good chance that this team will have a bye week for the first week of the playoffs. If that’s not enough to win Josh McDaniels the coach of the year award then I don’t know what is.

5. How about the Chargers? 2-3 now is bleak – see point number one. They have the Chiefs and the Raiders next, so they had better be 4-3. Kansas City, Cleveland, Tennessee, and Washington are on the schedule after that, so they should have at least seven wins. That leaves trips to the Giants and Dallas, and home games against the Eagles and Cincinnati. They certainly have the talent to at least split against that group, though they can’t be trusted based on what we have seen from them so far – their only wins have come against struggling teams. This team should have somewhere between seven and 10 wins. That may have them in the playoff picture, but it won’t make it easy for them. It will certainly make it difficult for them to win the division. What a waste.
