– In perhaps the least shocking development in the history of sports, the Giants cut Plaxico Burress today. Good riddance. Sadly, he’ll be rewarded with a new contract from somewhere else soon, and it will be like nothing ever happened. Idiot.
– Huge blow for the Mariners today. Ichiro Suzuki had been feeling tired and sick, and it turns out that it was a bleeding ulcer. I’m no doctor, but that doesn’t sound good. It has apparently stopped bleeding, but it will take a while for him to recover and he has been placed on the 15 day DL. That will keep him out for at least the first eight games of the season. From the quick reading I have done tonight it looks like these things just don’t go away, either, so this could be a recurring problem this season. Needless to say it never good for a team to lose their best player, especially when that player is one of the best in the league and that team has perilously little depth. I have been flirting with being bullish on the Mariners for the last couple of months, but this makes it harder to take that leap of faith.
– Surely I’m not the only one who was shocked beyond shock about the resul in the Cavs game tonight. For the first time in the entire time he has been playing basketball, LeBron James found himself down by more than 40 points. It was the Magic that did the thrashing – they were up by 41 early in the half and they cruised to a ridiculously impressive 29 point win. It was very ugly – for the Cavs, at least. Strangely, it all happened despite Dwight Howard only scoring 20 points and adding 11 rebounds – nice numbers, but not overly overwhelming or anything. It’s just one game and all, but this is certainly not the way you would have expected the Cavs to play, especially considering how well they have been playing up to this point. This has to give the Magic serious, serious confidence going into the playoffs. The most interesting result will be to see how the Cavs bounce back from this one.
