The Washington Redskins (2-2) are coming off an emotional road win at Philadelphia and hope to carry that momentum home for a matchup with the Green Bay Packers (3-1) on Sunday. Washington quarterback Donovan McNabb enjoyed beating his former team 17-12 last week and now needs to avoid a letdown against the favored Packers (-2).
McNabb surprisingly has more passing yards (958) than Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers (940) through four games, although Rodgers has thrown five more touchdown passes (8-3). Neither signal caller has been able to rely on much of a running game to help balance out their respective offenses either due to injuries to the starting running backs.
The Packers lost running back Ryan Grant to a season-ending ankle injury in the season-opening 27-20 victory at Philadelphia and have struggled to replace him ever since. Brandon Jackson has failed to do the job in his place with just 27 carries for 74 yards in the last three games combined.
The Redskins will be without running back Clinton Portis for the next four to six weeks due to a groin injury, which means Ryan Torain will get the opportunity to show what he can do as the starter. Torain rushed for a career-high 70 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown against the Eagles. He followed head coach Mike Shanahan from Denver and could provide a spark on the ground that has been lacking to help take some pressure off McNabb.
Green Bay’s defense leads the NFL with 16 sacks, including seven by NFC Defensive Player of the Month Clay Matthews. However, the Packers have suffered a few more key injuries to their defense and may not be as effective rushing the passer without rookie safety Morgan Burnett (torn ACL) and linebacker Nick Barnett (wrist) helping out in coverage. They surrendered a season-high 431 yards in a 28-26 win over Detroit last week and could be tested by McNabb, who has shown some mobility despite his age.
Rodgers likely will be licking his chops as well going up against a Washington secondary that has given up 305 passing yards per game. The Redskins could not stop Houston in their only home game back in Week 2, as Texans quarterback Matt Schaub threw for 497 yards in a 30-27 overtime loss.
Green Bay is 5-0-1 against the spread in the last six meetings with Washington, winning each of the last four straight-up. The UNDER is 5-1 during that stretch and has also cashed in three of the four games for the Packers this season. As we mentioned above we like the Redskins and will take them at +3 on the Bodog Sportsbook line.
