The NFL’s lone unbeaten team this year meets the last undefeated team from last season when the Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) visit the Indianapolis Colts (2-2) on Sunday. The Chiefs are coming off a bye week following their most impressive win of the season and meet the Colts (-7.5), who already have as many losses as they did all of last year.
Indianapolis has played three of its first four games on the road but dominated the Giants 38-14 in the only home game during that stretch in Week 2. The Colts fell at Jacksonville last week 31-28 when Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee drilled a 59-yard field goal as time expired. They had been unbeaten through at least the first seven games in four of the last five years but now find themselves hosting arguably the biggest surprise team of the season thus far in the Chiefs.
Kansas City ranks third in the NFL in rushing offense thanks in part to the addition of running back Thomas Jones, who led the top-ranked Jets rushing offense a year ago. Jones has combined with Jamaal Charles to form a lethal one-two punch on the ground, giving the team two of the 14 running backs in the league who are averaging at least 70 yards rushing.
That could be trouble for an Indy run defense surrendering 149.5 rushing yards per game. The Colts lost run stopper Bob Sanders to a triceps injury in the season-opening loss at Houston and saw his replacement at safety Melvin Bullitt go down with a season-ending shoulder injury last week against the Jaguars. With an inexperienced player now filling in for Bullitt, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel may be able to build off his best game of the season.
Cassel threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-10 win over San Francisco back in Week 3 after passing for 244 and one touchdown in the first two games combined. He will try to help Kansas City become just the eighth team ever to open the season at 4-0 after starting the previous year at 0-4. If the Chiefs lose, the NFL will be without a 4-0 team for the first time since 1970.
Indy quarterback Peyton Manning looks to make that statement a reality by leading his team to its 10th win in the last 11 meetings with Kansas City. The Colts are 9-1 straight-up and 8-2 against the spread in the last 10 games between the teams, although the Chiefs have covered two of the past three. Manning has thrown for 325 yards or more in three of the first four games this season with 11 touchdowns and just one interception, which happened last week at Jacksonville.
