The Gators had high hopes for this season and also big concerns regarding their offensive line. Monday red shirted freshman Ronnie Wilson, who was supposed to start at right guard, fractured his left ankle.
The Gators were ranked number 8 in the recent USA Today preseason coaches’ poll. Last year in his first season as Florida’s head coach, Urban Meyer installed a spread offense and saw his offensive line struggle.
As MadduxSports.com noted in this year’s Florida Gators preview, “The team’s hoping for more production from the three returning and two new backs. However, giving the backfield an opportunity to excel may be a problem, since the biggest question on this club is the offensive line. Last season along with offering little run blocking power for the ground game, Florida’s offensive line gave up 35 sacks in 12 contests, the fourth-most in the SEC.
Meyer had moved many of the offensive linemen around this season and saw a lot of promise in Wilson, who had been a standout in high school. Wilson will miss the first three games, including the big September 16 contest against SEC East rival Tennessee.
