Here are top stories for last weeks college football news. With the arrests and DUI’s, NCAA football is becoming more and more like the NFL each and every week. Still this is good info from the guys that make the best college football picks on the net.
Two Vols players arrested, several more connected to bar-fight
Two University of Tennessee football players were arrested following a bar-fight Thursday night. Freshman wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers and sophomore safety Darren J. Myles Jr. were arrested, and senior receiver Denarius Moore as well as sophomore defensive tackle Montori Hughes have been questioned by the police.
Sandy Morton, co-owner of the nightclub in which the fight took place, said that seven to 10 football players were beating up one bar patron. An off-duty officer reportedly tried to break up the fight and was left unconscious and had to be transported to UT Medical Center with a head wound.
If this turns out to be true, assault charges are almost certain. On top of that, of the four players who were named in press reports, only Moore is 21, so the others could face problems for being in the nightclub.
Sophomore linebacker Greg King and sophomore defensive tackle Marlon Walls were apparently part of the altercation as well, and have been suspended by the school indefinitely. Myles has been dismissed from the program permanently.
USC will not be ranked in 2010 Coaches Poll
The American Football Coaches Association has announced that USC will not be ranked in the 2010 Coaches Poll in the wake of sanctions the school faces in the Reggie Bush case. The school has filed an appeal to reduce its postseason ban from two years to one, but accepting the one-year ban makes them ineligible for the 2010 Coaches Poll.
USC will still be ranked in the AP Poll, but the Coaches Poll is of more interest, as it figures into the BSC standings. While the Trojans won’t be able to play in a bowl game anyway, a high ranking in the BSC standings and the Coaches Poll always brings more attention to a school and helps in recruiting.
Shoemate transfers to UConn
USC fullback DJ Shoemate has announced that he will transfer to UConn and play for the Huskies in the 2010 college football season. He will be ready to go in the team’s season opener at Michigan September 4.
Shoemate will join running back Jordan Todman at UConn, and the two will form a dangerous rushing duo. The fullback stands 6-foot-1 tall and weighs 205 pounds. He has shown off his speed with a 4.5 second 40 time.
Two Bulldogs facing alcohol charges after Evans resigns
Sophomore tailback Dontavius Jackson was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and additional charges Saturday. Jackson ran for 38 yards on only three carries last season.
Split end Tavarres King has been charged with underage possession of alcohol. The charges come only 10 days after UGA Athletic Director Damon Evans was arrested for DUI. Evans resigned from his position Monday.
Henderson to play for Miami (Fl.)
Offensive lineman Seantrel Henderson is planning to enroll at the University of Miami, Florida in August. Henderson was released from a letter of intent by USC Tuesday in connections with the sanctions the Trojans face.
Henderson is considered the top offensive lineman in the 2010 recruiting class and will bolster the Hurricanes’ front five and their odds against the college football betting lines. Thats it for now see ya next week.
